Has anyone ever mis-pronouced your name? (Real or username)

And if so, whats the funniest one you've recieved!

I made this topic, because an old mate of mine saw my user name (i use the same one everywhere) and thought it said - Beta Cakenoes.

I nearly died with laughter, because Beta cakenoes in a welsh accent is amazing.

How do you pronounce 'Raziel' anyway?

I've been calling you 'Razzy-yell' this whole time, or is it meant to be 'Raze-E-ull'?

Anyway nobody mispronounces my real name, it only consists of 3 letters. But I used to use the gamertag "YokelScience" until somebody mispronounced it as "Yokelassence". Been using that name ever since. I have also been called "Yokelance"

If you have trouble with my name, I recommend "Yoke" or "Yoko"

I use my name for Lan parties all the time, and people seem to think Xavious is pronounced EX-avious. Which bugs me. Plenty.

Real name is Casey, most people don't mispronounce it unless looking off a list not knowing I'm a guy, in which case Cah-see is a popular pronunciation...

While my name is normally pronounced, my first name however is always mispronounced ...
At the point I wonder if people knows how to read :angry-cussing:
But with my nickname, no probs with it.

My last name is difficult to pronounce to most people- or all people.

Other than that, nobody really has a problem with my username.

Only Icelanders can pronounce my real name correctly. Especially my last name.

I bet we can. How is it pronounced correctly?

Nobody can pronounce my last name correctly. Must be cause it too simple. Some of the more common ones:
Rickett
Ry-kett
Ry-kert
Richard
Richards
Richitts

Some even have trouble with the first name and some can't handle Carnivour either. Its supposed to be pronounced the same as Carnivore.

Close. Byurn Alfrethson is probably the closest a text description can go.
Some details to note:

English r's and Icelandic r's are very different. With a lifetime of practice I scroll r's with ease but I have heard it is very challenging for many native English speakers. I think Willy from the Simpsons can do it pretty well. :P

Byu- because my name doesn't have an o but an ö (o umlaut). Our ö sounds a lot like the 'u' sound in words like 'under' or 'up'.

People usually get mine right, its ether Yeager or Jaeger.
The automated phone calls screw it up bad.
ROFL I bet they would realy screw up some of yours.

I remember when having to tell someone my surname to fill in on some receipt or the like.

"Richert"
"uuuhh.. R I C H A.."
"No, RichERT. E R T"
"Richards"
"No, E R T"
"R I C H A R D"
"E R T. Rich. ert"

In the end, the thing said " Richard". Wtf :P

Hah hah, awesome! :D

I must admit I never heard of Richert before, but I can't imagine it being something difficult to pronounce. I'm guessing maybe because the alternative, similar sounding Richard is more common (I think), people just revert to what they are used to.

Post subject:  Re: If only they knew!

Guess so :)

But when you spell it out.. come on :P

As DC mentioned up there, very few get such a seemingly simple name right..

Post subject:  Re: If only they knew!

Yea, I'd blame it on the fact that 'Richard' is a very, very common name to the point where we expect every 10th person to have it. People are assuming you just said 'Richard' with an strange accent.

I can't scroll my R's at all. It's one of those things you gotta use while you are growing up or else it just becomes absolutely awkward

Well, we do live in South Africa, one of the countries with the worst accents and pronunciation skills... ;)

We've never had problems with foreign names, or any names, it comes naturally, you pronounce it how the originating language does..

Europeans tend to be better when it comes to linguistic skills... :handgestures-thumbupright:

Hell, why not.

Try to pronounce this. 90% of everyone gets it wrong, and it's usually over a PA system.

DeColibus

What language is it from?, Spanish, Italian?, something from western Europe? ;)

To be fair, i'm usually the one cocking up the pronouciations for peoples names...

Dyslexia is a cruel and unforgiving bitch i must say.

I have a greek friend, whos been an amazing mate for a very long time now, who has also had years of every single teacher in our old school pronoucing his name wrong XD

We used to just wait at the beginning of a new class for what the teacher would say... good times... i miss them so ;/

Almost right. The C is hard.

It's originally Italian- De Collibus apparently means "down from the hills".

Yeah, it was a toss up between the two, not knowing exactly which language it was from, but I was pretty sure it was Italian... ;)

Well, you did a lot better than most people.

Some of the ways people pronounce it cannot be adequately represented in writing. ;)
