Because it might have been approved without looking at it properly, it happens all the time.

There is also the possibility that because you're not the author of the said project. Adding other's projects on 'behalf' is usually frowned upon.

Here's the development thread of the project to clear this confusing context.

But I was told by the Author I could do so :/ and really the author was a fake author and the real author contacted me and told me I could keep it up. so that makes no scene.

I host a lot of mods that I didn't developed myself so, that's not that.
Sarge ask the administrators of moddb, because no one can help you here

You guys do realize that porting Half Life content to Unreal is completely illegal, right? I'm surprised you thought they would keep the files up.

Post subject:  Re: My Moddb page for halflife weapons

I disagree, it really depends if the mod authors had the authorization to do so, I saw dozens of weapon ports from game to game so that's not illegal as long as there is a proper authorization.

Post subject:  Re: My Moddb page for halflife weapons

I'm more inclined to think that the porting of weapons from HL to Unreal was not authorized. 90% of the time it isn't.

Post subject:  Re: My Moddb page for halflife weapons

That's why I said it's a matter of authorization, I saw dozens of ports who are perfectly legal, it becomes illegal if the mod authors only ported stuff without any authorization.
It works also about the game remakes, some people port games to newer engines, you have the right to do so if you got the authorization from the game authors.

I'm not sure if I ever saw such a thing. It's more of a "it's only illegal if you don't get caught" high risk release I always see.
Most even lie about having the go ahead like any Nintendo game remake or so, because Nintendo absolutely have qualms about their IP being used without authorization, just an example. Mario Kart: Source have no idea what they're getting into, and MGM and/or Activision might be building a case against Goldeneye Source already behind the scenes. It doesn't even matter if it's a project made for free without profit in mind - unauthorized use is still unauthorized use, and intellectual property is nothing to have 'lemming pressure' for.

Some companies are actually lax about fan use of IP, such as CAPCOM, but when you use names for titles like say MEGAMAN 13 you'll run into trademark issues instead as they will be required to sue, which also concerns the big potential for the above projects to be even more sued as well for trademark violation, and no, "changing one letter" won't save any butts and neither does the "free advertising" excuse since often the remake projects intend to exist to displace the commercial release so they don't have to buy them.

I don't think Activision's building a case against Goldeneye: Source. They've had released versions for years now, and two commercial games by the same name have been produced during that period. Since I beta test for them I'd probably hear if any licensing flak was raining. ;)

When there is a problem with legality the Companies are often quickly responsive, not when the project is building (since most of the time the projects cancel themselves), but much more when it's close to come out, or when it came out.
Though the SiN remake project was aborted before it has something released by the company who owns ritual entertainment.

Yeah some companies are a bit lax since for them they see that as a form of advertising, but some companies like blizzard doesn't allow people making mods based on their IPs
There was a cool starcraft mod for C&C generals, and they shut down the project a few months after its release.

Weird they usually reply, but I think it might be because of legality issue.
Sgt kelly pretty much said to me that valve doesn't authorize ports of their stuff even between their own games

They should still at least tell me this >.<

Post subject:  Re: My Moddb page for halflife weapons

The only way to have them being legal is the fact that the modders have to make their own stuff instead of importing. I think this wouldn't be a problem except if someone have something to add, I think this is the only legal way to do it

Even me I wasn't aware that porting HL stuff was illegal, I thought the modder in question asked permission for it. Well as it was said earlier in the thread some companies are more lax about this, since Epic for example doesn't forbid that kind of thing.
