I was just wondering, has anyone here heard of this game?

Kerbal Space Program

Essentially it is a pretty fun and not too serious rocket simulator, where you build a rocket and then try to fly it. At the moment it is both still in development and still free. It's pretty easy to pick up, and there is a tutorial to teach you the controls, as well as a wealth of parts that modders have made to satisfy those who have decided to move beyond the stock parts.

Latest version is 0.11.1 (win/osx), but there is currently a series of experimental versions leading up to the next release that contains the moon and other things. The latest of those is (at time of writing) 0.12x3 (win/osx).

Anyway, here are a few screenshots of mine:

So you essentially just fly a rocket around, can you build it at least?..

Not sure I'd go for any plain simulator, and rocket games ain't really my thing.... :)

Yeah, you have to build your rocket using a set of parts (the game comes with 16 parts, and there are about 300 more parts made by fans).

I suppose you would have to have at least a passing interest in flight sims or rocketry though. Still, everyone likes explosions, and when things go wrong (a frequent occurrence ;D) there are plenty of those.

A rocket building game sounds like fun.

I've updated the first post with download links. All are under 100MB.

Here are a couple I'd recommend:
Wobbly Rockets 1.09 - Not updated for a while, but has some good parts.
SIDR 1.3 - Also a very good pack. Along with the above is the 'standard set' that most people have.
Assorted Hardware - Has several decent packs.
KW Challenger Pack 0.4 - Has a lot of larger parts all scaled with the stock parts in mind. The largest bits are really too heavy for the game to handle though. This requires the experimental 0.12x1 or newer.
Silisko Edition 0.6 - A complete set of parts that replaces stock parts and is balanced more towards real rockets. Not recommended for use with parts not from this pack. This requires the experimental 0.12x1 or newer.
Modifications for KerbalSpaceProgram - A list of pretty much all of the released mods.

Over 300 parts, that sounds more interesting for a fun little now and then game.... :)

I do like rocketry, but not simply choosing and launching rockets, which is what I was expecting...

But I see it has more intricacy in assembling than I originally thought, and things go wrong if they are not assembled correctly... >:D

I think I might just get this now.... :D
