Its pretty dead around here so I just thought I'd find out what games keep you coming back every once in a while... :)

The kind of games that you play again and again for the sake of nostalgia, or for some indescribable reason you can't quite put your finger on... ;)

What games have this effect on you?, and why?(if you can describe it)..

Right now, I'm in a Stalker mood, don't know why, I just missed it.... :D

Most Star Wars games.
Battlefront 2 has the four different factions and all the classes, and a fair amount of decent mods for it as well. But the stories, in general, fall a little short.
KoTOR/2; they both of decent stories and interesting characters. A wide array of weaponry and upgrades(expanded even more in TSL). For mods, they mostly revolve around clothing and models. TSL has better(for lack of better word) mods for the weaponry, but it's skill not on, say, the level of UT2k4's modding community.
The Unreal series; it's fun. I mean, the plot is fairly simple(just escape from a planet).. And I'm honestly not sure what U2's plot is. Obviously, the modding community is huge. It just never gets old, and when it does, you can just try a new mod(or new range of).
Return to Castle Wolfenstein; I just enjoy this game. I don't think I've used any mods in this game either. It's one of the only games I can play "vanilla".

That's it really, for PC games... i think.

Damn, Unreal 1 is quite something! There just seem to be no games like it. It seems so simple and obvious like there'be a million clones, but there just aren't any. Its got an awesome atmosphere and theme and is full of amazing places and the music! Seems like Epic poured all their imagination into Unreal 1, cause they haven't used much since. Epic's characters were much better before words started coming out of their mouths. You could at least pretend they weren't all meatheaded assholes if they didn't interrupt your imagination to remind that they were in fact assholes and were very serious about it.

Nostalgic games? I can tell you Quake II, Half-Life and the big Unreal of course! :D

But my favourite nostalgic games are:

- RACE MANIA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ang__f_wVfE). This game has given me many good and impressive moments! I never tired of this game! I love it! This game calm the headache and provides simple colors and a lot of fun! You can shoot missiles, guided missiles, put mines and oil stains. There are also acceleration enhancers and people crossing the road. Unfortunately only works in MS-DOS :'(

- Raptor: Call Of The Shadows (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYa2g9_5Ss4). Another great and simple game! You manage an advanced fighter prototype with many weapons, my favourite weapons are the laser and twins lasers oh yeah! ;D

- :romance-hearteyes: Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xskRL0n3 ... re=related). My best game platform style for PC! I love frag turtles! Beautiful colors and good action! And comes from EPIC GAMES! Mmmm... this crazy brown rabbit sounds me to someone... ::)

Edit: Shogo - Mobile Armor Division, Forsaken, Descent 3, Future Cop L.A.P.D., Croc 2, Rayman 3... oh boy, what moments!

Holy smokes I remember that game! I played the shareware demo of it over and over and over and over and over and over and....

Dang, I wish I played the full version. Best of game of that genre I ever played

To add to the list:

Commander Keen 1 - 6:
Keen 1 was the very first game I ever played and kick started my eternal interest in gaming. I bought the full versions 1 - 5 and even got hold of the unofficial sequel known as Keen Dreams. I only ever played the demo of the 6th sequel until the copyright expired 2 decades later. Playing the full version of Keen 6, after spending my whole lifetime dreaming what it would be like...you can't even imagine the nostalgia

Duke Nukem 1 - 3D:
Needs no explanation

Heretic:
I never played Doom but I did play heretic. The next closest thing. Turning demons into chickens was the best thing in the world

Descent 1 - 2
I'll never forget the father/son moments playing Descent 1 multiplayer (my dad enjoyed this game too back in the day). I still play Descent thanks to the D2X-XL source port.

Freelancer
Doesn't date back as far but nostalgic none-the-less due to the multiplayer experience I had with it. I built an entire life around it. I miss the ol' ICONZ server

Half Life 1. I loved the heck out of that game, and it was my 'Unreal 1'.

I didn't find Unreal 1, which I played later, to be nearly as enjoyable!

Witchaven, Doom, first Heretic, Unreal's.

Doom, the first Heretic, spent hours playing over the phone line (not Internet) $00.6 a minute with my brother, on a 486 with Windows 3.0. Good times.

Unreal and Halo on XBox with my kids.

I'd have to say of all games, Unreal 1 and Half-life 1 have had the biggest impact on me, so many memories... :)

Other than that I fondly remember all multiplayer games, got some good HL1 memories there, mostly because I never cared about winning and provided insane comedy when running at people with a crowbar in a suicidal manner... ;)

Ah the good old days... :happy-partydance:

Unreal 1 i'm playing through again at the moment. Quite possibly the best single-player FPS ever created :) I prefer it over HL1/HL2 which are also brilliant.

Also, Total Annihilation!! Best RTS? Might just be :)

Played a bit of Doom 2 with the 'Brutal Doom' mod which is also great fun.

I played a lot of SP mods for UT/Unreal
Especially operation napali, legacy, spacial fear, xidia, Marathon R

Same for Deus Ex (TNM, 2027, Hotel carone, Malkavian, Unreal Revolution, Hardcore, Zodiac)

Serious Sam The Second Encounter (which I have three copies of the original, one steam downloaded, the original disk and the version in Gold). Unreal Tournament, Croc, Mario Kart 6, Kirby 64 and Half Life 1 and it's expansion packs.

Edit: Shogo - Mobile Armor Division

Ah raptor and the twin death rays, though there is so many interesing weapons like the pulse canons, the turrets, the dumbfire missiles

But I often replay duke nukem 3d, blood, a lot of litetech 1 engine games (shogo, blood 2 and NOLF)

shogo for the mecha phases, blood games for the fun weaponry (the flare pistol never gets old) but more interstingly there is the voodoo doll and a black hole generator who sucks everything into it. Duke Nukem 3d for the fun and interactivity, SiN (a game that apparently only a few people played it), Serious Sam SE which is the best of the series. Soldier of fortune, because if its weapons (FLASH, slugthrower, Microwave gun, the machinegun, and the best shotgun ever made)
Red faction

As for RTS I usually play and replay Red alert 2, Total annihilation, warzone 2100, Earth 2150, C&C generals

Post subject:  Re: Nostalgic games...

Here are the games I usually go back to. There could be few:

Doom / Doom 2 Good old Doom. These are what turned me to gaming and ruined my healthy sense of reality. Of course, its with modern engines and so much more crazy now with that BrutalDoom mod.
StarCraft I have played many a game of this. We always play our custom maps so resources don't run out and you get huge battles. ZERG!!!
Raptor: Call of the Shadows Replayed this many times. I'm surprised to see so many people here know it! Good old Twin Death Rays!
UT 99 Old UT is best UT
Quake III
Diablo II Great fun in LAN and now with mods to triple monster numbers!
Uneal I
Half-Life Best singleplayer ever is either this or U1. Also great fun in MP; me = shotgun + jumppack.
Total Annihilation This is a proper strategy game. Would be nice to have a modern update of this.
Red Alert I Especially awesome now as a full mod in Red Alert 3 engine.
Quake I
Quake II This is what we learned modding with.
Commandos
Age of Empires 2, Age of Mythology This is usually because of their multiplayer.
Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow WarriorMortal Kombat Trilogy And the bastards won't release a new one for PC!

You can probably find supreme commander being the game you want, it's pretty much the modern TA.
As for commandos I loved this game.

Why you scoundrelous heathen! You, sir, are a gnome!
I've played SupCom, but it's definitely not up to the same level as TA. Its like a simplified, watered down TA. Where are the seaplanes? Where are the construction planes, oh god where are they?! TA with a mod to raise the unit limit to 1500 is quite something.
Hmmm, maybe I should look into SupCom mods. Perhaps they could put things right...

I have TA in the basement, but I haven't played it. Have you tried Real War?
Or a game using the Spring engine?

Also, totally true about U1.

Post subject:  Re: Nostalgic games...

Ah, UT99, definitely the best UT by far, so many memories of awesome multiplayer matches! :banana-dance:

And Starcraft, another classic, more awesome memories of endless Zerg swarms!... :D

Those two and Unreal 1 probably had the biggest impact on my Game Dev path, after those 3, nothing really sticks out except Diablo II...

And now for some sacrilege, I've never been a big fan of Doom, its certainly a good classic, but its not really better than the aforementioned games, I guess its the impersonal-ness of it...

I guess I'm more into games with depth these days, gameplay and concept alone doesn't cut it anymore to get into the "Best Games List"... :(

Post subject:  Re: Nostalgic games...

Some good old, all-time favourites I guess:

Doom 1/2
Total Annihilation
Unreal 1
UT99
Diablo 2
Starcraft
Quake 1 / 2 / III
Half-Life (DM was awesome!)
Commandos is always good fun in MP as well.

Also, as a somewhat separate list, some games I figure have had a large artistic or thematic impact:

Doom 1/2: The Sci-Fi, the Demons, the combination!
Quake 1: Very cool, unique theme, and brilliant audio design.
Unreal 1: Like Quake 1, the anachronistic style works awesomely here. This also had amazing audio all around.
Diablo 2: Did the 'Dark Fantasy' thing very well.
And I'm not sure if it counts, but, Warhammer!!!!

Starcraft, i like to customise a little bit on it sometimes on and off more off then on.

Counter strike source - (now im unfortunately addicted to it again. its a pretty shit game overall, weapons are not realistic. some unlogical bullshit is there. Maybe i just like the graphics and somewhat the fact that its a strictly teamplay things, and i have to watch my step not just run around as a fool (that is aginast bots, i don't play online).

i think the Quake, Unreal, and Mechwarrior Series were quite Nostalgic. Quake because of its fast paced and amazing death match gameplay, unreal for its atmosphere and huge open and beautiful environments at the time, along with both those games awsome soundtrack. Mechwarrior because...well what isn't fun about storming around in a 60 ton mech blowing shit up? Hell the 90s was an amazing time for PC games, there were a lot of great games out that i haven't even had the chance to play.

Ah, CSS, decent game, and awesome bots(more or less), but yeah the weapons can suck at times, but you learn to rule with the M4!... :D

Indeed the m4 carbine is rather good, thought how the ak can be reloaded faster then the m4 is a mistery. Also, supressor makes it waay too silent plus, somehow it reduces damage, like if the guy would secretly swap all the ammo for underloaded ones. its rathe good at middle and small range maps. Though i also like to use deagle plus m4 shutgun. In close range and small range i would use the sotgun, two three shots at most and the person is dead, all the shots will distract his aim. if there are more, i would not be able to fight off more then 2 so no need for extra ammo. at medium ranges the deagle is not too acurate though it packs more then the m4 carbine.

Plus the g3 variant with terrorists, is rather nice, sometimes its just good to injure everyone as quick as you can, and your mates deal with them easily. I love the mac too, how it sortof always climbs towards the head of targets. though i hate this game. it sucks pretty much. i bet the only thing that keeps me playing is that its somewhat realistic, plus good enough environment on maps.

Hah! The best weapon CS:S, is obviously the CT's 'ES Five Seven' (the pistol). No joke... :)

the problem with es 57 is that somehow with its lighter w8 without stock you can shoot more accruately with similar fire rates then with p90 :P also, one have to repeatshoot the persons to kill it. the p220 (i think or some other sig pistol) suffice one headshot sometimes. i gues the best weapon would be the minigun, but i have to try it.

I'd have to agree, certainly the best pistol, usually don't have much trouble killing any enemies with it, its good in a lot of situations, but the M4 is usually my standard approach... ;)

If I'm on the Ters, then its usually the Kreig or AK, but then everything is good except the SMGs, I'll take pistols over SMGs... :)

though the mac is a killer one. very good in close quarters. alos the ump is somewhat ok, you can run around and shoot with it somewhat accurately. however in reality its all bullshit. Normally, you would be able to shoot more precise whil running with heavier weapons (more inercia) but change target faster with lighter ones ( duh). longer weapons would be more accurate aiming wise as well.

I wish there would be an smod for css version of engine. It had somewhat cool flmethrower (though fire bounced too far from wall). Is it possible in ut2004 to make a flame effect out of dinamically adjustable meshemitters, so that the meshes can be transformed, or added to them at will?
