If you happen to be mentally ill in a particularly exceptional way and somehow answered "Yes" to the above question, I invite you to sample the future you seek. Simply pull out your network cable, crush it under-foot and get someone to shove a fist up your ass to get the full SOPA experience.

Since this reprehensible subject affects us and you, here's the thread. I'm sure you all have an opinion on the matter.

Obviously our stance is against this faecal offering.

(P.S. Don't go too nuts)

Seems like a good way to catch the little guys, but not the guys doing it on a larg scale.
Sound more like a way to control the Internet.

This is indeed bad. Besides giving america complete control over what the government wants the internet to be, sites that point out other sites being naughty get immunity to this act (wtf?). This will affect everyone, regardless if you are american or not.

It looks like the media dinosaurs (big and out-dated) trying to beat down the new competition instead of evolving. Nobody seems to learn that you can't hold back progress forever, you just end up holding yourself back.

It is quite aggravating that a foreign government gets to pass laws over you that you don't even get the pretense of having any say in!
On the other hand, this could end up back-firing badly by helping to push the internet away from American control. I'm sure some other countries wouldn't object to hosting profitable companies. This would of course leave the poor old USA back in the stone-age, siphoning off one of the few industries left that is not in recession.

SOPA is another one of those obvious attempts to strip you of any freedom you might have, under the guise of "Helping you"... :angry-cussing:

Laws like this are a lot like sexual predators, which is a lot like governments in general... They will be all nice and I'm a good guy, and if you aren't informed that stuff like this is bad, then they GET YOU!!.. ;)

From what I've gathered, this act gives massive (read: way too effing much) amounts of power to media corporations and the US government. (I'm sure we all know where the vast majority of the government's campaign contributions are coming from too.)

I hope this bill doesn't make it through. This is one of the most ass-backwards ways to combat piracy. We have the secret service and the CIA, why not just send them out to, I dunno, seize the servers of sites like thepiratebay? While they're at it they could beat the living crap out of the people responsible for even getting us to the point where a bill like SOPA would seem reasonable. I mean don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the government work to take down piracy, but this is dumb.

You can check out a video about the SOPA bill here. http://vimeo.com/31147134

Unfortunately its just a mater of time before the government takes control of the Internet, gun control, birth control, free speech and any thing they can to keep the public in check.
Fight back and at lest slow it down.

They will never get that far so long as the public has a back bone, Kadaffi wanted a USA(United States of Africa), but he's dead now, let that be a lesson to any government that tries screwing the public for too long.. ;)

I don't believe in that defeatist idea. The guvm'nt doesn't have absolute power. The people always have the power. You can make a difference.

I believe in fighting, but I know how underhanded and sneaky the government is.
If it dosent pass, the fight will not be over.
The government only has the power we give it, unfortunately the US is full of pacifist.

Oh, guvments are wonderful aren't they? People I don't know and didn't vote for being my masters and making up clearly well informed laws about things they obviously understand and not being influenced at all by the agenda of wealthy corporations.

Wait... so if someone posts a link to anywhere without explicit written permission, then the site hosting it gets closed down if the target of the link wants them closed down?

and wait...

it is not the users fault...

So if I buy idk... http://www.Raziel38529475.com or something, then post to it on facebook, I can sue facebook? XD

Mal

P.S this is rather hilarious... in a dark humour way >w<

No, not quite.

If supposedly, a user of a site posts a link to copyrighted content, the owner of the copyright can make an accusation and the site is then blocked. If you posted a link on our forums to something like: a pirate download, a song, a video of you setting yourself on fire while some music plays in the background or possibly a link to another entertaining video of faux news in action, they could block our site,

Of course, users don't have to do anything at all. A biz asshole could just accuse a competing site of posting copyright content and that site gets taken down while the matter is decided in court.

No, what you can do is post a link to piratebay on facebook and observe while everyone who's content is illegally available at piratebay sues facebook.
Or you can write a poem and then accuse facebook, claiming someone posted it there without your permission.

P.S. I believe that is a requirement for a law to be passed.

You know what they say, the antonym of progress is congress.

I like the start of Ars' article: "The public outcry over the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act seems to have gotten so loud that even members of Congress can hear it."

Hey Runestorm...

Hehehe, but on a serious note the matter of SOPA is being argued far and wide across the internet. Over on the KYM boards, it started more than one thread over there and stirred plenty of discussion. So I have already been over this.

As far as I have seen 100% of all arguments regarding the bill have been in utter disapproval. In its original state, it would have caused global outrage if it passed.

I won't repeat what has already been said. The message should already be clear by now, even to congress: It's a terrible idea for obvious reasons that many have already stated both here and elsewhere.

PS: in case my trolling was not fake enough, I don't support SOPA

SOPA/PIPA are the worst attempt to combat piracy i have seen, it's equivalent to shutting down a grocery store because a shoplifter worked there once upon a time, if Gov's wanna stop piracy they need to go after the Pirates, not the distribution methos, take some examples from japan, instead of banning or shutting down a file -sharing program, tey used it to track the pirates

What I do not understand about the whole thing is how they can calculate the loss of revenue from piracy. What guarantee is there that Joe will buy a film on DVD if his search for it on the internet is unsuccessful? For what we know, the industry's loss may be trivial.

^I read a report about it, they used some studies done back in the 80' and 90' and grossly inflated them for lost revenue and jobs. I'll see if I can find it later.
