Scripted characters, these are any characters, NPCs, or Bots in a game that are designed to add life and 'character' to the game, they are meant to have personality, and in many cases relate bits of story or are, as per the story, your friends... For example: -Alex Vance and Dr.Kleiner (Half-Life 2): -Officer 10 Penny, Mike Tereno, or The Truth (GTA SA): -Garrus Vakarian and Ashley Williams(Mass Effect): -Many characters from The Witcher. -Any NPC that is meant to have more than a "Serve Player and stand here" job can be considered... Some of these 'Scripted Characters' do their job very well, while others might be absolutely useless and just seem rigid and lifeless that you want to beat them with a rock.. For example: All NPCs in Two Worlds where they all sounded so lifeless and had no personality of their own.. But what are the best that you have come across, the height of glory and personality that they feel real; Contrary-wise, which are the most diabolically hideous and grotesquely wrought ones you can think of?.. PS: Don't worry about trying to get the exact description of a 'Scripted Character' right, just write what you think counts.. |

Garrus Vakarian, Thane Krios and Jack from Mass Effect 2 for the best scripted, they are interesting and feel like great partners in combat. Samara from mass effect 2 for worst scripted. Bland, uninteresting story, lame powers and worst loyal mission ever. |

The ones that most stand out, Half Life 2. That game is pure art. GLaDOS is also quite the character, as is Wheatley. Those characters, however, contribute little to the gameplay. Only Alyx in Half Life 2 occasionally helps shooting some enemies. I do think that this shows that the characters are story-based in a game and that more attention should be put into the characters to make them contribute more to story than to gameplay. The main issue with the behaviour of NPC's ingame is that they're completely retarded. They are always standing in the way or running into impossible situations while your mission is to protect them. Sometimes, in order for the story to progress, you need NPC's to do stuff ingame alongside the player. In this case it's best if they just can't die tp make your mission fail and stay out of the players way. No player wants to fail the game because of the NPC's stupidity, mainly because it's not their fault and so it is unfair. So I think, a good NPC is one that contributes greatly to the story (so they sound real, act real, and make you feel like they're actual persons), without getting in the way of the gameplay. |

I like the dog from Fable2. I didn't think too much of the game but I loved the dog. Never got in the way, never required anything, was helpful in combat without being too powerful, helped progress some storylines by giving you a bit more concern for it so that when someone kicked your dog, you really wanted to kill that jerk. I think I would love to see a survival horror game with a dog as a companion implemented similarly. The dog helping in combat wouod be much appreciated if resources were scarce, but if the dog no longer coupd fight after being seriously hurt unless it had time to heal, you would have a practical need to protect the dog without wasting resources. Plus moments where the dog gets seperated from you would add great tension. |

Without thinking too hard, the favorite characters I can think of: GTA IV has got lots of entertaining characters, especially Roman, Little Jacob and Brucie! Those dudes were hilarious! Of course, the stupid rapper, the various mobsters and bad guys, the irish family and just random freaks you'd find were also quite funny. GTA's characters are awesome because they are all freaks, psychos or are just a bit weird and have, you know, character. GTA:SA also had good characters like The Truth, Tenpenny, Ryder, Toreno. Saint's Row 2'S characters were not as good as GTA's, but a few were OK like Mr. Sunshine and The General (despite being obvious stereotypes) were very entertaining. Half-life 2's characters were quite good. They were very well done and didn't grate like many characters do, but I found them to be a bit mundane; archetypes that everyone's seen a hundred times before. They were not very unusual. Dog was quite decent too. I think Left 4 Dead's characters were very good. They say some very funny things at times and their commentary doesn't seem to grate horribly like most games would have had. Some characters were OK in The Witcher, and the overall level of the characters is mostly well above average. Just about everyone in that is a sleaze bag or weirdo rather than a generi-voiced talking post that hands out quests. Batman: Arkham Asylum, the Joker! I definitely enjoyed his lines and the stuff the thugs said was also quite fun. Hearing the Joker taunting his thugs over the PA system was great fun. The characters in Gears of War (only played the first one) were rubbish. My favorite was the hillbilly that operates some lights in one section and utters the best line in the game. Fallout 3 had a few good characters and even a few scumbags and greys. UT99's characters were more interesting than the later UTs even though you could only find out about them in the short bios during the campaign. The characters in UT2k3 and onwards were pathetic. If "Serve Player and stand here" characters are ruled out I don't have to mention the boring non-characters in most RPGs. Diablo 2, however, did have a few good characters. Unfortunately, it's not so easy to remember bad characters because the biggest trait of bad characters is that they're unmemorable. Most of the time, the voices and other supporting content only serve to define just how empty and boring the characters are. If left to the players' imaginations, the mystery would be better and we'd fill in the blanks with much more interesting stuff than the stupid, generic or out of place stuff they usually use to describe characters. I find it especially awful when your own character says something that is so far removed from what you are thinking and what you would say. Gordon Freeman is totally awesome because everyone has their own ideas of who the character is and if Valve ever tried to fill in the blanks and give him a voice, it would be very disappointing. Overall, I think GTA's characters are the most entertaining. Even the pedestrians are much more entertaining than the characters in many games. Another thing I'd like to mention is that a quality portrayal of a character and their life and all the things they do, all their little thoughts and all their hopes and dreams doesn't necessarily make a good character. A quality portrayal of a boring, mundane character doesn't make them any better. I want characters that do interesting things, say strange things, that have bizarre habits, make mistakes, exhibit fear, superstition, stupidity and have failings and negative traits. I want characters with character! |

The MMORPG "Runescape" has lots of funny and entertaining stories, with many good characters. The dialogs and even the names of the figures are often filled with puns while not really feeling like overdone. However, I can't give any examples right now because all I can think of are puns that refer to other Runescape monsters or characters, so you would not find them funny. +1 on the GTA4 stuff. |

GTA: SA and IV! As DC cited -Left 4 Dead series -Some of the Borderlands characters -Some of The Witcher (mostly because basically no one in that was a good guy) Some of the bio's for the UT99 chars were cool too. Not enough games have characters with character. I hope we get to make some games on our path that feature characters; I'd like to get some of our crazy ideas in there |

It certainly seems difficult to remember bad ones for that exact reason.. It's also the main reason I thought to exclude characters that simply "Stand And Serve"... Not much to add from my side, pretty much everything has been covered... Loved the Left 4 Dead chars. Especially the conversation about "Blood Farmers", "Swamp People", "Jimmy Gibbs", and many others... There were some decent ones in Overlord, and Overlord 2, loved the "Silent Monks", "The Horrible Pixies", and of course the ridiculous "Elf guys", "Legion guys", and pretty much everyone!... Divinity had some nice ones, I mean nice in the broad sense of the word.. ie: Gen. Luxurious.. Also a few in Assassin's Creed 2 and brotherhood were quite decent... RE4's Ashley was pretty well-scripted. She keeps up, stays behind you at all times, and when she does end up stuck between your shotgun and a crazed, axe-wielding Spaniard, she ducks, which is awesome and very helpful. Also, her little fidgeting animations when you're shooting at dudes are adorable. |
