Post subject:  Game Lore; Best & Worst?

I left out last week's topic, it was a bit of a mess, but now we're back on track... ;)

Today we shall discuss the depraved depths of game 'Lore'. This refers to the collection of place names, monster types, character names, and just about anything that sets the background scope of the world's variation in cultures, factions, architecture, nature, and other such things...

Lore often governs story, the story, plot, theme, and premise are usually all set within the bounds of the game's Lore, but as such the lore of a game is not the story or plot itself but a broad guideline.. :handgestures-thumbupright:

For example: Diablo's Lore is about 'the three prime-evils' and it's set in a world with several cultures and factions, not least of which are the arch-angles.. :angelic-flying:

The lore for some games is great(Like the aforementioned Diablo), while others fail dismally!...

Pretty much all games have some form of Lore, but I suppose you can't say a game with no Lore is a bad lore...

At any rate, what are the best, most holy and memorable examples of Game Lore you can mention?..

And on the other hand, which are the most aweful, diabolical tromps through hitherto unknown depths of depravity that you can think of in terms of Game Lore?..

The Elder Scrolls, and specifically, Morrowind. That world is so much richer in lore than Oblivion or Skyrim. There's tons of books to read and npc's to talk to that share TONS of lore, while in Oblivion and Skyrim, the npc's usually only talk about the storyline and such.

Warhammer 40k has great lore too, although I don't know a lot about it myself.

I know plenty of games which have no real lore or just didn't care to put their efforts on the lore but instead on the gameplay and graphics, but I don't know any games that executed it badly while trying.

Metroid Prime had awesome lore. You could scan anything and everything and it all had a story to tell. :)

Similarly, I also liked the 'lore' of Mass Effect (since you can't have a good space opera when you know nothing about the aliens). I once spent around 30 minutes reading all the codex entries you get on the various cultures and races. It's always neat to think about how someone, somewhere wrote that up and managed to seamlessly integrate it into a game environment.
