simply everytime i have had to upgrade my video drivers on any system i have had with ATI video cards there have been Massive problems, this time around the control panel type application for ATI cards "Catylyst Control Center" simply didnt work at all, so sent in a bug report and got a rather long laundry list of steps to do to fix the problem,
1. remove ALL C++ 20XX Redistributable packages, and reinstall .NET Framework now reboot system
2. uninstall all ATI/AMD software, reboot again, but now in Safe Mode(never a good sign when ya gotta go to safe mode)
3. Manually delete all ATI directories in Program Files and Prgram Files(x86)
4. go to C:\Windows\Assembly (a directory that is not exactly a place you want to accidently delete the wrong files) and look for "usually only 2 entries" with Public Key Token 90ba9c70f8467623 and delete them, now reboot
5. Install new drivers and software again

Lo and behold i get to step 4, and get to the public key token bit, and that "2 entries" turns out to be 187 (<-lol bit of a difference there heh?) so the first time around i get a little worried and only deleted the 2 entries in there that actually had the Letters ATI in them, and after step 5, Nothing works still

Send in another report, 4 days later still NO RESPONSE (not happy on that part), so i decide to follow the steps again and go ahead and delete all 187 items( figured if anything goes wrong i can always go back to a factory restore) and yey! everything works (so far atleast)

but safe to say, i am NOT EVER buying anymore ATI products, this last round of problems has P'ed me off pretty bad

(sorry if that got a little ranty)

I've never really thought that ATI/AMD cards were much worse, but I've also never used one.
We've always had nvidia cards and they seem to just work. Well, that is, except for the ones that died.
Never had software or install problems with our nvidia cards. Never had problems updating drivers.

I hardly ever had any problems with my first ATi card, a HD 5770, I use today (got it in July 2010). The only time games or software didn't run correctly was legacy OpenGL ones but one driver update finally fixed that. Though admittedly ATi's driver engineers seem to be completely disconnected from the user base and never seem to read any bug reports, so if you encounter a problem there is no use in reporting it, you just have to wait until they finally find and fix it a few versions later.

I think rule number one for ATi users is to not use the Catalyst control center, it is a steaming pile of garbage. ATi Tray Tools is a far far better piece of software that does more or less the same thing with just a fraction of the resource footprint and with a much more intuitive and less annoying interface.

I had an ATI 9800 Pro that worked perfectly way back when. I mainly use Nvidia cards now, but I've never had an issue with ATI.

I used Traytools with Win7 (64Bit) Home Premium, so you may be able to make it working too.

BTW CCC and Traytools in parallel usage isn't the best idea. And also, Traytools aren't developed anymore and updating to newer driver version isn't as smoth as with CCC even if the CCC is a dirty piece of junkware.

Nvidia for me, No problems so far. Only my PSU blew once and fried the GPU. But, shit happens

There is no reason to do that. You naturally uninstall CCC first.

And from a quick google search it seems the latest ATT beta isn't all that old (Oct 2011).

FRACKING A! ended up having to do a full ractory restore cause all that update bull destroyed something critical somewhere, and EVERYTHING but Steam ceased to function properly :(

12 hours of the process later and i am finally getting to the point of re-installing all my games

If you didn't need to reinstall your OS there is no need to reinstall games, their files are unaffected by video driver tinkering.

Here is a small tip: Save a copy of the hard drive image containing the OS after you have configured and made your system ready for use. Then resetting the system if something goes wrong will be a quick and painless process.

well all in all, i am NOT updating the software associated with ATI ever again, Rage aint that great of a game, and as things are now i can run everything i own except rage, so it comes down to do i want to play Rage or all the rest of my games(someof them are quite ancient(KOTOR II and Unreal 1 to name a couple)

I didn't have any serious problems running RAGE on my ATi HD4800. I had texture corruption initially, looked around online, went into Catalyst and disabled the AI thingy, worked like a charm afterwards.

my PC says i have a Radeon HD 4200, and here is where ATI is getting on my nerves a little atill, i go to their website follow the instructions and get one driver, but if i download their autodetect and install thingy, i get a different driver

the one from following the website links by selecting product and all that works for all my steam games but screws over older games, (eg. and modified content in oblivion goes SCREWY!) but if i use the one from the auto detect and install, RAGE don't work but everything else does, though this problem may stem from the fact i have a Dell Inspiron 570 (Dell is doing anything BUT inspiring me to buy any more of their ****). they preinstall the ATI drivers, but in such a way ATI's CIM cant recognize them so to upgrade Catylyst or any other of the ATI software i gotta do ALOT of manual deleting of registry keys, hidden and protected system folders and files( not something i am fond of doing)

oh and as to using ATI Tray Tools, tried and it CRASHED my PC completly ended up having to do another full system restore cause windows would not load up at all after installing ATT

ATT is in principle only a registry editor, it gives you a GUI access to a lot of driver settings whose values are stored in the registry. Why that would make your OS go to hell is beyond me, as it works just fine for me on several systems, and doesn't integrate itself into the system in any way aside from start-up, but even that is optional. What you can maybe do if this happens is to boot into safe mode and remove ATT from start-up, or boot into a command-line interface and remove it from start-up through commands.

Also, I probably don't have to stress that you should uninstall CCC before installing ATT, it may very well be that if CCC and ATT run in parallel they will be in a power struggle and that is bad news for the user.

As for updating drivers, I strongly recommend not letting Steam or Windows Update do it. First uninstall the display driver component using ATi's set-up application you find in Add/Remove, reboot into safe-mode, run a driver cleaner (Guru3D maintains an excellent, free one.) to remove the last traces of the driver, reboot into Windows normally, install the new display driver (ATi offer downloads that only contain the display driver and nothing else), reboot once again and you're done. The whole safe-mode/driver cleaner routine is actually optional, if you're not up for it then you can just skip it, it should not cause any problems if you do.

And yes, ATi tend to have rather shoddy compatibility with older games, especially OpenGL ones. I am using 11.12 I believe and all my games work, including oldies like Quake 2.
