Primary- swing the flail around, hit somebody with it, medium range, can't hit walls or hit will hit you back in the head

Story- as a Skrith weaponist studied human medieval weaponry, The Skrith had found that a flail is good for Anti infantry use, and had the same Unknown skrith engineers get to work, after 4 days of argument and lazy fish tacos, this weapon was made. While it's cool swinging it around, hitting a wall or floor causes the flail to rebound and hit your head, causing 30 points of damage to be lost, doubles with the plasma battery. If you are not using it, a small shield around the head of the flail protects you from hitting yourself in the head

Ammo- 40 seconds of battery time, recharges

A flail would be a bitch to animate properly.

It would probably work for UT3.

The problem you'd run into then is the fact that you'll have less control over the weapon, especially if you take player movement into consideration. You may often smack yourself in the head with it a lot.

Well maybe when your not using the flail, a shield pops around the head of the flail, making it impossible to it yourself in the head, then when you do use it, the drops and you can hit people, but the rebound of the wall still counts as hitting yourself in the head.

What I'm not getting here is how the Skrith discovered the flail to be a good anti-infantry weapon when they can accidentally smack themselves silly when they use it wrong...

the whole shield and smack self in face thing is ridiculous.

everyone's complaining that the flail can hit you in the face, hence the shield.

well... the idea of the player being able to smack himself in the face with a flail is just flat out hilarious. i dont think a person smart enough to use a flail would do this in the first place(the shield only exist for the idiot running into walls?).

Well, we could avoid this mess by simply turning this weapon into an axe.

Y'know, we could also solve this problem by simply retracting the (plasma) chain into a solid steel rod, turning it into a mace. More force equals more power.

Flails can have a lot of force if you swing it in a circle, which is what you should be doing with it in battle anyway.

Once a flail makes impact, it loses its momentum. Whereas with a mace, the momentum is still within the wielder's arm/s, allowing him to drive the mace further into an object (in the Skriths' case, a terran's head).

Plus, you need a relatively wide space to be able to swing a flail around. We're talking about the Skrith here, and they don't go for open areas just to use an unwieldy weapon.

Swinging around a flail lets you gain much more momentum than just a swing with the mace. And it really wouldn't require all that much space to use.

Here's a possible compromise: Make the head of the mace retractable. When not being used, the energy field pulls in the head to the end of the handle, where it is stationary. When used for a quick attack, the head stays put. When used for a power strike, the head pops out a few feet as you swing it in a circle. This pop-out technique would also give extended range over the quick strike. Also, I think this would allow the use of animations instead of relying on the physics engine. When you are not attacking, it's a rigid object. When you are attacking with the head extended, then your player would be locked into some sort of swinging animation, which would allow for a believable animation.

Not sure if fit to see in bw, but definitively the most fun weapon saw in some time, specially the self smacking part.

You wouldn't be able to smack yourself anymore if it's self-retracting... and that's a good thing.

More velocity = longer reach... But when the flail hits a solid object, it would have a .5 second delay before retracting (with the loss of velocity) so the flail's momentum wouldn't be so abruptly stopped, thus retaining its brutal power.
