This sounds awfully much like the fusion cores we see in the citadel in HL2. They are very small, stable and pack lots of punch. But when there is no more matter to fuse, then either the heat needs to be increased to take the process to level 2, or put a new one in.

Heh, I talk about fusion cores like they are portable and easy-to-use.

This doesn't make any sense. So you're saying not only does a compact, man-portable weapon contain a means to convert energy to matter and propel this matter to very high speeds, but it also contains some kind of portal to an infinite number of dimensions that it can draw energy from?

Well maybe not but it could be possible on a vehicle,or eventually people.(don't doubt the power of necessity)

It is also possible all the matter and energy converting machinery as well as the device that creates the portal be located in the energy dimension,and all the person has to do is have a inter-dimensional signal so the energy foundry can just port in the matter to the weapon.

That would be neat, but nowhere near the technology level the weapons in the game demonstrate.

On the other hand, that quite perfectly explains how a man is able to carry several tons of weaponry and ammo around

also, a flamethrower, a lightining gun, Railgun, and minigun, each with a backpack.

The UT2 guys have big pockets like Serious Sam or the macho-men of Quake series.

Correct. Though there is still a good chance the slug would go through an important organ. One could also create a slug that is meant to not go right through you, but instead transform the energy of it's movement to the target upon impact, making you fly backwards in other words. That is pure speculation though, I don't know how possible it would be with the speed of railgun slugs. A slug like that would probably need to be thin and have a decent surface area so the hit gets leveled out on a bigger area of the target.

Ive got an idea, there can be a slug with an explosive inside it that when it hits a player it sticks in halfway through the body, and the special attack could detonate the slug causing that ion storm thingy, instantly gibbing the victim and anyone around that area! and to stop it being way to overpowered, it could take (say 8 seconds) to recharge!!
