Exactly, but materials aren't an issue, those nanobots are capable of re-arranging the electron configuration on the effective layer of molecules to change them in various ways.
That is if nanobots would exist in the first place.

This Idea was inspired by Deuxhero's tranq gun thread and Gaara from the TV show Naruto. The idea's this: A pair of gloves that look like futuristic VR gloves with nanites swarming around them in a loose formation when passive, but when activated turn into razor-sharp spikes. Primary fire attacks melee style, secondary fire makes sends them out to swarm around the enemy, pressing again makes them come back again and if you press primary when they're swarming the enemy, they crush him. Special fire makes them swarm in front of you like a shield, shield gun alt-fire style but nanites instead of whatever that shield's made of. Change fire mode sets how much the nanites attract eachother. Firemode 1 would make them just a swarm of nanites circling around your gloves, you'd basically just be punching, firemode 2 would make them attract eachother, so you can flail/slash your enemies with elastic spikes and firemode 3 would make them attract eachother very strong, so you'd get solid punching blades. Firemode 1 would be as fast as the Skrith wristblades, firemode 2 as fast as the katana and firemode 3 as fast as the combat knife. Nanites sould also inflict a minor tazer effect on the enemy in every fire mode. If the crushing part is a bit overpowerd, the nanites could just attach to and cover the enemies body, immobilizing him and inflicting a major tazer effect upon the enemy, after wich they'd return to the users gloves. |

For the first part of your post: Nanites are nanobots. They'd just be tiny, shiny, black particles. The second part of your post I didn't understand. |

This sounds disturbingly similar to an idea I had for a shape-shifting melee weapon, only mine was nano-infused mercury, giving them something to work with. I just might have to make that thing myself, if I ever get well-enough aquainted with UScript.
