The flamethrower seems a popular idea for a new weapon. Just so we're strait on this, I'd love to see a flamethrower properly done too- it would be kinda like a cross between the spread of a shotgun and the constant spray of an SMG. Since BW isn't cartoony like UT and the weapons are supposed to fit together instead of being a random mishmash like ChaosUT, a flamethrower needs a reason to be included.

Treaty isn't the only reason no one uses flamethrowers any more; there are already weapons similarly effective at every range that aren't huge and dangerous to the user and don't have volatile tanks. This should be solved by making it futuristic like other BW guns: give it a fuel cylinder loaded like a largish clip that isn't on the outside and exposed. Since it's futuristic, say it uses exotic expanding foam fuel with incredible chemical energy or something like that, the development of which allowed the flamethrower to become a practical weapon.

And use a special kind of gas to make superheated flames, and the flames travel a long distance from the gun.

i would accaulty hate to see the flamethrower in BW!

My reasons

#1: ChaosUT has it and its crappy and poorly implemented
#2 other mods have it and is crappy
#3 it would be a pain in the ass to get the flames from it to look kick ass good!

I hope it won't spam the whole screen with flame fx like the other ones... Nice n tight, and sticky like napalm. And I still think there should be a ranged function like little incendiary (fuel) nades. Great for shooting through (high) windows and such...

ah well thats why the Ballistic Weapons mutator has the ability to tell which weapons to spawn (which i friggen love, now i always get my M50, BOO YAH you stupid X2 gun):evil:

So back to topic what, would you carry a tank of exploslive fuel on your back when using the Flamethrower?

What about something that protects the fuel tanks on the back? Like an invisible energy field around the tanks?

If you are carrying the flamer when you die, you should explode into a skeleton.

I like the way you think! If the fuel projects for a few metres before igniting it can get to the target faster, have better range, be a little bit safer and easier to aim. Plus, it would fit the futuristic theme better and you don't have to figure out how to make it look good. IMO it seems video game flamethrowers are killed by the fact that flames flow like liquid around terrain and walls 'N stuff and the ones in game don't simulate fluid mechanics. Having the fuel only ignite after hitting the target would get around this without making your CPU choke on obscene physics workload. I'm thinking have a stream of projectiles affected by gravity that, upon hitting the target do the following:

=> Determine whether the target has been hit before.
=> If no, spawn an actor on it.
=> If yes, tell the actor it's being hit again.

The actor works like the sticky grenades in default UT, but it can be charged up like the mines in the spidersteroids mut. They start spawning the flame effects already made by the Willy Petes in BW, but if you keep spraying the poor target even more flaming death starts coming out of them... It'd be kinda like a super berserk biorifle in GOD OF HELLFIRE mode!

That's exactly why I suggested it have a small tank in a well-protected box. Significant technological refinements would be needed to make a flamethrower practical; that's the whole point of the thread.

Yeah, the SMG is sexy.

Well, it could also have a 3rd Special mode... ;) For ex. prim = normal fire, alt = nades, Special --> switches alt to fuel spraying.

What about special mode switches to another type of fuel that emits blue-ish fire that does more damage?
