Ever wondered why the Terran were forced to use ballistic weapons in the first place...?

DESCRIPTION:
The Mass Driver was supposed to be a Terran military staple, but because of its bulkiness and ammunition being energy-based, it was outclassed by the Skrith's stealth, agility and anti-energy armory.

AMMO-TYPE:
The MD makes use of Energy Cells. These are a bit harder to load than normal ammunition.

PRIME FIRE:
The MD has two primary fire-modes (that can be, or course, toggled by the Fire-Mode key):

-It can fire extremely rapid bolts of energy, or;
-It can fire a mid-ranged laser cutter that deals lethal damage to vehicles and can penetrate walls.

Both of these fire-mode require the MD to charge-up for a few seconds. While firing, the MD builds up chaos, recoil and heat all at the same time. To prevent overheating, the MD locks its trigger when a certain temperature is reached. The drawback to this is that the MD must be fully cooled-down before the trigger is unlocked.

SECONDARY FIRE:
The MD charges up to fire a ball of energy. The longer the charge, the bigger the ball and its blast-radius. Bigger energy balls are also capable of scattering into smaller balls once they make impact. However, the drawback to charging it up too long is that the MD has a chance of self-destructing - other times it allows the wielder to deplete its entire ammunition, but these cases are rare at best.

SPECIAL FIRE:
Mounts the MD, sacrificing mobility for accuracy. To make up for this obvious drawback, the MD also deploys three free-floating Battle Drones that orbit the wielder. These drones project a small energy barrier that protects them and their wielder from small-arms fire (bullets). They can also fire short bursts of stun beams, but only when an enemy gets too close to them. Once their energy is depleted, the drones can be easily destroyed.

This indeed sounds very cool. 8)

But your name for it is a little misleading, I expected the mass driver to be an actual mass driver, ie, a Guass rifle outfitted to launch any type of projectile that can fit in it.

I personally think the name could use a change, but other than that, its a cool idea!

Though I love the sound of those drones, it would make it a little unfair to the other mounted weapons, I think.

Well, it is a Superweapon after all... Despite its humiliating defeat against Skrith technology, it's still quite formidable against Terran ballistics.

I dunno about changing the name though... Mass Driver just sounds cool to me.

Ah, I see.

Yeah, I have to admit, Mass Driver is a pretty awesome name. 8)

Hmm. when I think of Mass Driver I think of a single super powerful shot that could tear through almost anything....

BW needs a traditional superweapon. This is it. 8)

BTW, mass drivers are basically huge-scale slingshots. It doesn't really fit here, but it still sounds cool.

That name reminds me of Arkon Weapons.

Me too, that little railgun packed a punch.

Though I like the concept of this, a laser turret would be interesting to say the least.

That was exactly my thought when I read the name too.

That thing was damn overpowered, even with just 10 shots. It did like 180 or so damage.

(well, so does the CUT2 ERDW, but that has just 6 shots and no scope)

Heh... Arkon and XxxX weapons... I liked the "Homing Link Gun" thingie...

Well, for one thing, I did get the name from Arkon's Mass Driver, but the general idea came from Wing Commander.

When are we gonna see an idea that comes from your own imagination?

isnt there a gun in the arkon weapons pack named the mass driver?

You don't read very much, do you...?

@ 'jossi

I dunno... Maybe if by brain grew to the size of a melon, I guess. So until then, you'll just have to settle with the idea-stealing, draws-from-inspiration me.

Besides, what FPS is original nowadays?

Not many. You can copy the concept, because creating new ones is very hard these days, what would be very possible is giving them a new look in-game.

*grunt* I'll second that I'd basically expect something called a mass driver to function like the existing railgun.

I certainly would like to see some Terran energy weapons that were from before the wars, and this would be a suitable heavy or super Terran energy weapon.

My suggested modification would be to revise it in the theme of a Terawatt Laser. Both the rapid stutter-pulse beam and the cutting beam fire modes are on theme, and a secondary charge up heavy blast would also be on theme. A radius explosion effect on the secondary charge blast is up for debate, but possibly explainable by the sheer amount of energy being released at a single point, causing nearby matter to break down explosively. It would be a heavy reactor backpack unit, prone to exploding if it overheats and significantly slowing the user's movement and aim down. Shooting the backpack may cause a core breach meltdown on the reactor, or radiation. Mounting deploys the previously mentioned shield system, plus or minus the drones. The only thing I'd wonder about is recoil/chaos. Lasers would be instant beam weapons with minimal recoil, in my opinion. Chaos from running or jumping would depend on if you envision the weapon system as heavy equipment, or as light ceramics or plastic composites.

The weight, encumbrance, and energy resistance of the skrith would make use of such as system obsolete in the face of available ballistic systems that are more mobile, effective, and cheaper to produce and maintain. However, you might still find some terawatt lasers available in mothballed storage, mainly reduced to the status of deployable heavy turrets in human vs human engagements.

That, the return of the airstrike/artillery painter, and the used of an orbital kinetic energy strike, via high velocity missiles, would make my superweapons loadout complete.

Too... much... technicalities... Brain... cannot... handle...

*explodes*

RS has the deciding-factor here, not me.
