Ok here we go again...

H88 Portal cannon

Primary- opens rift to allow for transportation to be a lot faster.

Alt- destroys portal charge, useful just in case the enemy comes over and takes your node and can easily transport to your base...

Special- switches from transporting to killing 8)

The portal, when switched, is now a mini black hole with a span of 10 seconds before causing a mini rift explosion.

Is this like the portal gun from that Source game Portal? If it is, well you are in luck, cause I fully remember some guy making a working portal gun, i think it got to beta status.

A portal gun has also been created for UT2004, its a beta right now but it proves this is possible.

I tried it out, Portals are not nice to my processor.

nevertheless, a portal generator would be a nice BW replacement for the translocator.

but storm you did not mention how transportation works; when you enter a portal...where does it send you? And how?

Maybe I'm just using an outdated version, but that portal gun's portals only create a texture, it doesn't actually mirror the world it faces.

So if you are getting any framerate losses, it is not caused by the portal gun.

I think you do have a outdated version Bjossi.

Looks like I do have the latest version, there has been no new release since I last downloaded in March this year.
Are you sure you aren't misunderstanding the difference between a texture and a mirror effect?

does it do the stuff that is shown in the first picture of that thread?

I have had ample time to examine the differences between textures and mirrors in UED, I assure you there is no confusion in that.

I did not mention what the problem was anyway.

I deleted the portal gun long ago so I do not remember if it actualy used a screendumped texture or a camera placement (but a camera would have been easier and more logical)

All I do know is that when more than 16 portals were opened at once my framerate suffered.

I was using one of the early versions of the portalgun so what ever performance inconsistency there was before, may not exist now in the new version which I have not tried.

What he means is that the perspective doesn't change based on the player's view angle.

How it works: you fire it then you fire another one then you can walk through the portal (remember: it has to be on "transport" not "kill") then you will be at your designated area. Alt fire destroys the portal allowing you to make another portal any where.

Does that explain it Yokel?

You apparently have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the portal should act like you are looking through a doorway, when you move around, the room in the portal's entrance moves according to that. Good examples are the portals in the game Prey.

Right now the portals just show a texture of the other side, doesn't mirror the other side in realtime. And that to me, is pathetic. But the author is working on the math to implement what I want so I'm just gonna wait.

When you say "texture" and "mirror effect". Whats the first thing a mapper will think of?

please be clearer in the future.

But not that it matters anyway; as you will find by reading what I said once more:

That is all I have to say on that topic.

Well, it doesn't have a camera placement yet because of math problems.

But why the game starts lagging for you if 16+ extra textures are added to the map confuses me...

I am as confused as you are really. But surely there is more to it than textures.

Consider where those textures come from. They needed some actor to collect visual information from the position where the portal spawned. Textures cant do this, they are either preset with the image or host another image on top of it.

I could only think of a camera texture client that could do this but I guess it is something else.

Perhaps I should download the latest version this time and see if it happens again.
