The days when weapons shot only 2 seperate things are coming to an end. Now that the "special function" button is now becoming more of a tertiary fire mode. It is more than possible for weapons to have a crapload of different abilities and the special function buttons can scroll through them all. Alot of our idea makers have recongnised this already and you can spot at least 3 weapons on this board that have up to three or more abilities. But it will be a long time before the average mouse has more than 5 buttons. And having to "switch" between all your choices in one direction could possibly get you killed when you really want something quick. If every gun has more than 4 types of ammunition and handles it this way, I emagine we could end up with a frustrating and fiddly game. I want to propose a "mode menu" Its not important now, but in the future when one gun can do 8 different things this might be worth considering. By pressing one button you can open a menu of all the weapons different abilites, each one wtih its own primary or secondary fire modes. In this menu, Primary fire becomes select up, secondary becomes select down and pressing the menu button again chooses the selected option and arms the gun with this fire mode. It could be alot quicker than tapping one key several times in a row until the selected option appears where you can overshoot and have to switch through everything again to reach that mode again. I am discussing this because one of my idea inventions (which is still being constructed in my mind) has a total of 12 different abilties including primary and secondary fire and 10 of those abilties have between 3-7 selectable abilties of their own. (dual-decaiary fire modes) I think this could be a simple way to handle them all. Or is there an easier way to manage all these modes? Any thoughts? |

Hmm... that seems liek a great way to handle that, but my question is, would someone truly need that many modes for one gun? It seems like you'd be better off splitting it up or something, but I guess I'd have to see your idea first. |

Mousewheel would be better for scrolling through the menu the item, with Primary to choose the item and Secondary to cancel. It's already in place for switching weapons in BW and the Battlefield games. Although I would certainly hope that a gun that can do 8 different things doesn't show up at all. That's kinda silly. |

Manhack had a similar premise, but it was executed magnificently... And to think it only used TWO fire keys! |

Well that definatly seems like a good way to do it if a weapon had lots of fire modes. |

don't make it TOO complicated... it wont be good to make people confused about all weapons and stuff. It might be that complicated that people won't understand certain weapon features, which could make the weapon balanced seen to other weapons. Making things unbalanced for the confused player. XD as long it is easy to oversee and not a big mess. |

Although I would certainly hope that a gun that can do 8 different things doesn't show up at all. That's kinda silly. Actualy some people are getting pretty close, I remember seeing one weapon idea (i think it was X's grenade launcher) that had at least 5 abilities. I think its only a matter of time. Anyway thats a good thought about the mousewheel, that frees up one button and a cancel button would definetly be needed. The last thing you need when someone is approaching you is to be looking at a menu. As a further compliment to speed we could still have one fire mode acting as a quick "select next" feature that doesnt require a menu. Besides I dont see whats so rediculous about having more than primary and alt fire. If you count single-shot burst-fire and auto-fire as a new set of weapon abilities then alot of BW weapons already have about 5 abilities. And Bulska im well aware of how much complication it can introduce, the worst part is being something new that noone has ever encourtered before. It might pay to indicate how to scroll, select and cancel up on the hud when the menu appears The menu should look pretty straightforward and not blast the player with everything at once. Our players need to be able to look at it and understand what to do next. Menu options should not be long sentences either. |

Yes you. Your multigrenade launcher fires 6 types of grenades and that can be considered 6 selectable abilities. Thats the kind of range of modes in wich a menu may be useful
