Just another quick idea to give the aiming key some practical sense. Quite on the contrary to my previous ideas on aiming, but still sounds fun.

I was surprised to discover that in games like Strike Force, etc., where there's no crosshair while not aimed, I somehow was still able to hit enemies just by guessing the approximate crosshair position in the center of the screen. People who play Call of Duty games are familiar with this sort of things, I suppose.

Another thing that gave me this idea is that most weapons in BW have quite a spread, and the crosshair is also a projectile spread indicator, changing its size as the spread changes.

Finally, I thought it was queer for a semi-realistic mod like BW that a virtual crosshair helps you to shoot things from a mile away even you're not aiming.

So here's the idea:

As an option, all the crosshairs lose their crosses and dots, becoming just circle and oval-like thingies, indicating only the approximate area where the bullets will go. However, it's not hard to guess the actual center of that circle - just a bit harder than if you had it explicitly indicated by a dot or a cross.

While aiming, the crosshair disappears completely - just because the iron sights give you a much better idea of the projectile direction, pointing exactly where the bullet should go (I always found it confusing to have both iron sights and the crosshair activated: in this case, the crosshair only distracts player's attention).

So, if you're running around unaimed, your accuracy is limited at long range but you still retain a good accuracy at mid and short range - an empty circle instead of a crosshair is still good for that. Also, unaimed mode remains great for wild burst fire from SMGs and stuff alike.

While aiming, you have to keep your eye on the iron sights and be more concentrated and that gives you a better accuracy. However, running all the time in the aiming mode will eventually get on your nerves: the gun blocks the FOV in a big way, and keeping oneself concentrated on the iron sights makes the player less tactically aware and all.

Hope that's all.

But... but...

What happens to all those cool crosshair designs...? ;_;

You know, during iron sight mode, the bullets will always go where the cross hair isn't, since it's going where the irongsight is saying it will go. So if it pulls off to the left, bullet will go to that direction, not with the crosshair.

They keep the same style minus the dot/cross :)

That's actually the reason why I propose removing crosshairs for the iron sight mode. You are just repeating my thought: iron sights show the actual bullet direction while crosshairs do not. No reason to keep them while the iron sight mode is activated. BTW, even if you don't have the iron sight mode on, bullets still go where the swaying barrel points, and crosshairs still don't show you actual bullet direction :)

Why don't you just go without cross hairs altogether? :?

Sometimes I do, but a total lack of crosshairs makes non-aimed too inaccurate...

I dunno, I generally go by the gun itself, it makes it a bit less accurate than with cross hairs, I guess, but it works for me.

I dont use crosshairs either, I dont even use a Hud, But i do like your idea, sounds like it has some potential.

Some people don't use crosshairs at all, but to others crosshairs might provide that sort of easy aiming at long range that can't be called even semi-realistic. This could be OK if we didn't have the aim mode (which has to make some sense as opposed to unaimed fire) but the way we have it now, simplified/nerfed crosshairs could make a good compromise both between aimed / unaimed fire and full crosshairs / no crosshairs.

Also it stands to reason that you're able to guess the approximate affection area (or how it is called in English) of your weapon indicated by the shape and size of the crosshair while unaimed, but having any sort of dots and crosses and being able to shoot people from a mile away without aiming is a bit too much IMO. Then you'd have to press the aiming key.

Me and my friends, we've just tried playing with no crosses and dots. We disabled the inside part of the crosshairs in the BW crosshair manager, limiting all the guns just to the outer element of the crosshair which looks much like a simple circle. The crosshair scale was set to 200.

It was really cool to play that way. Accuracy didn't suffer as much as one might think, - even a big empty circle gives you a pretty good idea of where its centre is, - but the aimed mode made a lot of sense! We were all switching between aimed and unaimed all the time and it was very fun to play. Aimed mode sort of gets on your nerves if you keep it on all the time 'cause it blocks the view and I wasn't able to concentrate on the iron sights for too long, but at greater distances aimed fire was the only way to make an accurate shot.

I suggest making a few exra options for the crosshair manager:

1. Disable dots and crosses - temporarily disables the inner element for all the crosshairs but doesn't reset individual settings for each of those. Just to switch between full and nerfed crosshairs without having to turn the inner element invisible for every type of crosshair manually.

2. Scale lock - temporarily forces the same crosshair scale for all types of crosshairs instead of individual setting for each of those.

3. Server synchro - if turned on by the server admin, all the players are forced to use the same crosshair setup as specified by the server. If we play without crosses and dots then crosshair scale, type and size can influence the unaimed accuracy in a big way (the tighter the circle, the better the accuracy, etc.) So better keep them synchronized then for the sake of fair play.

4. Crosshair off if aimed - whenever you turn on laser sights or activate the aimed mode, the crosshair vanishes. Better keep this option always on to avoid confusion.

I like this idea. Looks like something I might ever have a chance to use since I don't like crosshairs, but its a nice, simple addition that could probably be implemented quite easily and have some positive attention. :)
