Post subject:  my attempt at a map

I will be attempting to make a CTF map, called Bunker Buster. My aim is to create a map which makes high use of cover and team tactics. The basic terrain layout will be a map with 4 bunkers, 2 on each side with a subterranian tunnel between them which will contain a flag room, and a sniper tower in the middle on a hill. The hill will be high enough that the bunkers of your enemy cannot be seen from your bunkers. I also intend to create a small defelade zone between the bunkers and sniper tower that should provide some moderate cover. Also I intend on including several random cover features along the way such as sandbag piles, solid walls, and small dugout areas with and without overhead cover. My intent on the bunkers is that there will be some blind spots, specifically directly to the right and left, so that the entrance to the flag is more difficult to defend whilst in the shelter. There may also be a subterannian tunnel with entry/exit doors that will pass under the sniper tower but will be slightly more exposed to the bunkers. Alternate routes around the bunkers may also be implimented possibly through the use of bridges. I'm hoping to make the map cover quite a large distance to make your lives a bit more valuable to you and encourage more team tactics. Also there are many more intricacies which should balance the gameplay and tactics...mostly through visibility, cover, and location of weapons and ammo versus exposure to fire.

This will be my first attempt at a map, and I'm pretty sure by all of this I may be bitting off more than I can chew so if I find I can not complete it I may hand over all of my notes and concept art regarding this map.

I really hope I can pull this off because I've talked about it with all of my friends at school and they seem very excited about it...even the ones who barely know what UT is.

Well, I always say, you won't know know if you don't go !

I say good luck and let us know how it goes...I know there are quite a few mapping sites out there for help, and I'm pretty sure ShadowBlade wouldn't mind parting with a few tips here and there if you get stuck 8)

I've also been very interested in starting to make maps...but my time is VERY taken up with other projects at the moment, but they should be ending in a month or two, then I can get back to some serious gaming :)

Let us know how it goes...

thanks, i really want to make this one because...wow its just so darn cool in my head. I wish i could do this in the program i was using for my design engineering class...i think it was vectorworks not sure what version but i really got the hang of it after awhile...so far the Unreal Editor is pretty overwhelming but im slowly learning it, hopefully by the end of the weekend i'll have the basics down. I'm going to be devoting all of my gaming time and well pretty much all of my spare time to this map

thanks....I'm sure ur maps will be great especially if BW is any indication

Any idea what thickness of walls the BW weapons will and will not go through?

nah.. not really.. just try out the maps that are around.. just try shooting walls in general.. bullets cant go thru really thick walls.. mainly for like right through the corner of a wall or such..

16 UU's i belive.

3 Tips on map maping.

1. The Rooms/buildings/spaces make the map playable. By that i mean they make the map fun. I Always do the layout first, as i want to make sure that i never get "stuck" when playing one of my own maps.

2. Static mesh's make it look pretty. There the decoration and added functionability. Don't make them the map.

3. Keep to one or two idea's on your first map. Making a 3 base CTF, with underground caves, and a huge Assult style field with Optional air towers will only lead to disaster.

I say plan it good! Know where EVERYTHING must be and how it should look...
Well, thats my problem... I start with a great idea, and make the part I've thought of, but after that, it just doesn't turn into an entire map...

If I think of something cool, after mapping it, it never turns out like I wanted it to. :(

I'm told that I make phenominal maps for Timesplitters: Future Perfect. If I just implement that creativity into this, and put some good time into it, I could make a decent map, maybe.

If anyone here actually plays Timesplitters 3, some of my maps are:
Base 12-0-8
Base 12-1-8 (goes up to 12-1-11)
Grim Reaper Mansion
Golden Labyrinth...
I've got quite a few more, but no one's even downloaded a single on of them yet...so I haven't really gotten any real comments yet...

Oh, the map? No, I just can't seem to stick with making UT2004 maps. Every time I try, the next time I get to work on it, I just lose my creativity and start from square one, so I gave up. I might try again sometime, but in no way am I trying to take over the project. Sorry if it might have seemed that way.

By the way, Uglypants, to the best of my knowledge, Timesplitters 3 is a console only game, and I've got the PS2 one. I guess I shouldn't be going off-topic into console gaming.
