heres an idea for a largeish deathmatch map

Think of a huge towering sky scraper with rooms and grappeling hooks that lead down to the ground that you climb and varios windows you can smash to get in/out of the building there is a front desk ground level with 3 elevators and staircase 1 of the elevators leads to offece floors when you press a butto ( you can shoot the hatch on the top then climb the cabels) when you get out your in a hallway with some cubicls in front of you, down the hall is a secuity room with cammaras as well as a exit to the stair case. The other elevator leads to the "penthouse" CEO office, and another exit to the stair well the roof that has the 3rd elevator and stair case and from here you can climb down the grapleing hooks

some illsions to make the building seem bigger are there are more doors that have nothing behind them in the elevator shafts and stair well

in addtion there could be a nearby parking garrage and a small building the boundry could be closed off by a police line

I've had a pretty similar idea myself, it would be awesome to be in an elevator and able to see outside when the elevator is moving through the sky of the planet. :D

I'm sure there was a skyscrapper map for the good old orginal UT, actually more a of a very very tall crane, with some rather tall buildings around it...I just know it was a very very very long way down if you happen to fall off!!

(or am I thinking of some other game, it was quite a long time ago :) )

Yeah, that was DM-Crane. A 2K4 version can be found here. In fact, most (if not all) UT99 classics have either been remade or ported, and apart from nostalgia they also tend to have great FPS... And with BW style gameplay it doesn't really matter that some are a bit tight compared to current maps, or that you can't rampjump all over the place. :D

Keep in mind that some interesting DM fights can occur in a map like this. Some guys trying to shoot down the guy in the glass elevator moving up fast. :P Then when he dies he falls out of the elevator and the corpse lands on the ground with a baaaad bone smacking sound.

I think a single skyscraper would be a good map for an Assault game, definitely. But for a replayable DM/TDM I've always liked the idea of a small abandoned city block, with smaller buildings (apartments, a few stores, maybe an auto-shop etc.) with as much interior space as is possible with the UT engine without slowing to a crawl.

I mean, you'd have firefights:

In the rooms/corridoors of the buildings
In the streets, with lots of debris (vehicles etc.) for cover
Across the streets from window to window
Across the streets from rooftop to rooftop

Plus if it's wartorn, or adapted for the tournament, you could have fixtures, sandbags, gunners nests, makeshift bridges across the roofs, that kinda thing.

Maybe I'll fire up UnrealEd and see how much I remember...

That sounds like a great idea, the current maps that are like that in theme, have really crappy visuals unfortunately. If there is a decent one, then be sure to post a link. :)

But about skyskrapers. They can work in DM as long as the entire building isn't decorated. It can be tough finding opponents in 100+ floors. Maybe just have the DM map happen on the two uppest floors + the roof. And the two indoor floors could be centered around a room with two elevators. And have offices, bathrooms etc.

Well like I said, I'll dust off UnrealEd and see what I can do. Have to say though, I was never great with making maps in UT. HL and the like I was fine with, but the whole subtractive modelling was totally wierd to me. And the meshes still confuse me. Might model a rough layout in Wings3D first just to post some layout ideas!

Might be an idea in the future, but I know they have some specific ideas on a map pack in the near future for now.

BUT there's nothing to stop people contributing to maps for BW, I still think a "map" section on this site is going to arrive soon :)

The good mappers probably don't know that Ballistic weapons even exists, we need to ask on Atari for more members of the development team.

But it is a question of if the RS guys want to make this mod a big project between a lot of people. It is one hell of a job to maintain that kind of group together.

Yes, big teams usually don't keep one whole for a long time, resaulting in the mod gets worse by each release.
But the same mapper can't create all the maps, each person has own style, we'd get bored of that style after few maps.

Getting mappers like Angel_mapper or Yornan wouldn't be bad. :)
