I'd like to start creating an OSM Adventure map and was wondering what it should be like. Any suggestions would be helpful such as the theme, story, monsters, etc. OSM stands for Old School Monsta tools and it is used to create single player or coop maps that are played start to finish by exploring, solving puzzles, and fighting monsters. A Ballistic Weapons version would have you start with and only use Ballistic Weapons. The reason it would be special is that just using the Ballistic Weapons mutator with the available maps makes it crash. some maps: http://www.unrealplayground.com/forums/downloads.php?do=cat&id=18 Original release and description: http://forums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=530508 A few ideas I have floating around are: An urban assault/infiltrate the base style gameplay with the Hellions as the monster pawns. A jungle/swamp warfare where you have to sneak around and take out the monsters. A snow themed map. (Think last action scene of the movie Inception) Some kind of desert map involving Ballistic vehicles. |

Urban combat is fun, but swamps sound really fun. And I like the sound of using BW vehicles, particularly the Thor. What about some sort of war scenario, you start out in a swamp, must find your way into the secret underground base so you can disable the anti-air cannons so a tank can be dropped into the clearing to take out the final boss/fortress? For enemies, you could have the scenario that the swamps are home to some sort of nasty critters, perhaps bio-engineered to keep curious people from discovering the base (could be dinosaurs, quake monsters, Aliens, Doom monster, or my personal faves Magdelena and Effigy found here), inside the base could be a few of the smaller monsters but mainly some sort of human military/security type guys. Outside of the base should be the clearing with lots of enemies in a hold the fort type scenario, holding the area until the tank can arrive, at which point you can mow down fodder and take on big guys, perhaps some turrets in place to stop you, that type of stuff. |

That sounds interesting. I'd like the map to start in a giant swamp. I also am wondering if those custom monsters will work with the OSM toolset. I know that you can use the skins of the bots and default monsters, and Lord Simeon used the zombies from KF in Resident Unreal, but I'd have to figure out how to do that. |

They can be converted easily enough. I can help you with that if needed. I can also do some tweaks and stuff to them too if you want. |

Ok thanks. I'll probably want to wait on that until I have the maps pretty much complete. Then I can start working on all the stuff that makes it come alive. |

Sounds like a plan. I'll see what it takes to convert monsters in the mean time. If there is enough interest, I would strongly consider trying to make custom monsters to add to the experience. |

Maybe, maybe not. We have very little inowledge of what they look like. We'd have to get some good concept artists in on that before I would dare model them. I think perhaps I would prefer some attempts at Cryon or wholly original creatures, depending on what is needed. |

Nah, the charm to the skrith is that you're never supposed to know what they look like. If you had to use skrith, you shouldn't be using them as general infantry. You'd be better off using them as an obstacle, a trap. Say you got some dark area with no light in it. The player could wander around in it, hear some noise, then get killed from some scripted event. To get around this obstacle, the player might turn on some floodlights to drive the skrith out (perhaps to a new place) or maybe blast the crap out of the area, inadvertanly hitting some target(s) that will turn off the autokill script after hearing something die. I would make the areas large enough that if they do got some sort of light source it won't be big enough to light it all up. |

Well so far I have created a large swamp environment designed for the player to start at one end and explore throughout it with different sections where you can find items and then at the end, a structure that somehow leads to the next level, I'm not quite sure how I'm going to do it yet though. Unfortunately, college is starting up for me so I won't be able to work any more on this for awhile. I can upload the swamp map if anyone wants to work on it, or I'll probably work on it more myself this winter as I have always wanted to create a map like this. |

I wish I could help with that, but even if I had the time, I never had much luck laying out levels or getting all the scripts and triggers to work. Got completely confused with OSMT... Still, I wouldn't mind taking an early look at it sometime, at least give you some suggestions. |
