Post subject:  Hi, I'm Shea!!!

Hi there,

I'm Shea, I'm from South Africa and pretty interested in getting into the modding scene! I have always been a big Unreal fan since the release of the first game, my favourite being UT99 (still) but more oftenly I play around in the editors making maps since 2000 for LAN matches with mates... Unfortunately due to no internet connectivity at the time I never was aware of any modding communities and such, neither had the resources to fully learn the Ed, or share my work, always relied on my mates for criticism, so it was all up to figuring things out myself...

Anyhow, moving past my console phase (PS2, Gamecube and Xbox), About 2years ago I got me a neat new desktop (specifically for UT3) and the other old unreal games, and been fiddling with the new Editor, and with the internet connection I finaly got (yessss :happy-partydance: ), I have been able to find plenty of resources to better understand UnrealEd 3 and the new UDK, currently mapping and some basic level design for both single and multiplayer is what I am capable of, however I am also starting to look into moddeling and do alot of art as well to do my own assets...

So I have also been discovering the modding communities such as ModDB, and inevitably came accross a few favourite unreal MODS, which now has lead me here.

Good to find a local modding/indie team, I honestly had no idea there would be any at all (think so far I coincidentally ran into one guy on the forums from SA), so I hope to get in touch and learn a few things, and hopefully get involved and helping out once I get some real skill going, as I am looking for to adopt a new hobby in the modding and/or developing scene! (its my dream always to make games) But most of all, learn a thing or two from those who have success.

Besides all that, I have been getting into the IT side technology, Currently doing my MCITP exams after a year working in JHB, I'm actually more of a Linux guy to be honest, (despite all my employers disliked my knowledge on that), and I only keep Win7 around for gaming pleasures.

Other activities include mountain biking, paintball, volleyball on the beach, fishing, hiking, etc.. Also enjoy reading and studying up on new technologies (especially in gaming) to beter know and understand where the future is heading... Yeah, I love meeting new people, sharing opinions and having discussions, great to share perspective and see the world from others point of view (although they refuse to see mine)... aaaand I'm pretty sure I have over done this introduction, from here onwards it gets boring anyways, like my fave colour and food etc :-\ so im just going to stop now...

Thanks for reading..

Shea :greetings-waveyellow:

More South African devs? very nice!

Welcome to the forums, although an introduction like that is more suited to a job interview than the internet. ;)

Hey! Greetings!

Good to see more SA guys getting into dev these days :)

As for modding, with a half decent connection(we were on dial-up til 2010) and some perseverance, you'll learn modding easily enough. We learnt everything ourselves too, with the help of the internet every now and then for tutorials :)

Anyway, good luck and welcome!

Good to see some people full of life still remain in SA, ok maybe that's a little too pessimistic...

At any rate its good to see more SA devs crawling out of the wood work... :)

As for modding, the more you mod things the better you'll get(obviously), even more so when making your own assets, a very good step toward realizing your dream, as you mentioned... :handgestures-thumbupright:

Anyway, welcome to the forums and good luck... ;)

Ah thanks guys for the supportive comments!!

I'll post some work of mine online for criticism and link it on the forums here so you guys can check it out, currently im pretty dormant in terms of creativity, right now I am busy with exams, but should be done within the next month and will then become become active once again!

Thanks for the welcome!

Oh and btw I read about the dial up until 2010... how you guys managed, im not sure lol, but then again I had nothing up until somewhere late in 2009! Can imagine the internet for me is like being in the chocolat factory :happy-jumpyellow: But I seriously admire your work!!!

Yep, getting broadband for the first time, it really was a huge step up for us :D
We managed on dial-up for almost everything we needed, such as the occasional tutorial, but it was a big problems for large uploads such as BW and Crucible, especially during the MSUC..

Anyway, looking forward to seeing your work :)

And yet you guys managed still... Thats what makes legends! Not giving up and still manage to deliver! I pretty much read up about a lot surrounding the teams success, and honestly I admire that... Anyhow, thanks for the messages, I'll be poking around now and then, but need to attend to studies now... Will be having a chat in the near future again :greetings-waveyellow:

Adios

It is weird how ones life can change around in a blink of an eye... I was sooo amped getting into the whole modding thing, and next thing I know... I have a life... or not really, I have no time for myself lol.

Buuut anyhow, im a lost cause haha... I will pick up the hobby again once Im done with my studies and get a job that isnt 9hours a day =/

Ugh.. Sucks a bit :(

I take Sunday off these days, and try to spend some time learning some other useful things, or work on a side project. I've been starting to try my hand at 2d art, for concept art and such now. Need tons more work, but it's a skill i'd like to have. I also want to get into character modelling/sculpting, map design theory and get back to more fun music :) Still, 1 day a week isn't quite enough :P

Indeed, we all need something outside of a single task, otherwise we would go insane sooner...

I chose learning Spanish and making my own game on the side, a far cry from what I am really aiming for, but we do what we must.... ;)

Lol I work mondays to sundays... So yeah, But I took today off (yay), need to do some personal stuff to catchup with. Also arranging a third person to start helping out at the shop to have shifts, then we will have more free time..

Although considering the new law in discussion of recent, our shop may have to close down, if self defene becomes illegal... I work at a security adventure shop lol, mainly specializing in self defense, paintball and airsoft. So who knows, I may be back again soon to pickup where I left off.

I also did the languages lol, Spannish and Serbian... I am semi okay with both, can engage in small talk lol... But I would like to pickup on it again. My biggest problem is finding someone else whos interested in learning or can speak it to improve on it lol... But I must say, the spannish did pay off fairly well for Pan's Labyrinth movie, I knew enough to follow the movie quite well without subs.

Oh I see, well, if u do have free time, go ahead and help contribute here, we can always use more people like you round here. :D So go ahead and learn to make a gun or a some other cool thing when theres nothing else to do. I came in a similar situation as well, I got interested in the modding ways, so here I am. I currently know how to do some basic coding, and even got my 1st mutator here going.

Yeah I am into mapping and art, but I am looking to pickup modeling and texturing on blender soon once I get free time... Been wanting to do it for ages to compliment my artsy side! I have a mate that is busy working on doing some tutorials for me, so once I am done with studies and have my MCITP qualifications, I will replace my study time with the modeling =)
