Destroyable backpacks would definitely be awesome to see for all back pack based weapons at some point, but I don't think its really necessary right now.

What would be in the backpack to make it explode? Minigun rounds don't explode that easily like fuel.

Wouldn't necessarily have to blow it up. You could just have enough damage bork the ammo feed.

Theres all sorts of gunpowder in 1000+ rounds of bullets.

But yeah, messing up the ammo feed works too.

Gunpowder is flammable, not unstable.
It'd make sense if the gunpowder wasn't inside bullet "hulls".

What about you can destroy the backpack and the carrier loses the ammo?

Ammo doesen't explode, even if shot at, as long as the primer is not set off you can mangle it horribly with nothing to show for it but a bent and perforated casing, gunpowder is just not that volatile, its not explosive, its more.. a fast burner.

Fire however could detonate a round, but it wont actually shoot as it would if in a gun, the power of the bullet comes from rapidly expanding gasses pushing against the projectile in a confined area, without that confinement it is not very powerful at all, a firecracker of similar size would make a much bigger boom.

Ammo is actually very safe until you put it in a gun, feeding problems are the only realistic way to go.
