So, after reading a forum (In General / 'Gotta have to now'), I figured I'd start a thread where you can share what grammer/speling mistakes really irk you. Let's not start flaming each other, but instead just (calmly) talk about the errors that you want to make the corrections known to others. For example, I have at least a half dozen errors in this paragraph. Instead of flaming me and going off topic in a forum, you might simply post corrections (no need for names) here. I'll start with my top 2 quirks.

1: "It's" and "Its" do not have the same meaning. "It's" is a contraction for "It Is". "Its" is posessive, meaning that it is used in reference to something (generally the last noun used). So, don't say, "Did you see the BW mod? It's weapons look awsome!" It is weapons look awsome?

2: Prepositions are words you should never end a sentence in. For example, the previous sentence needs to be addressed. A preposition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preposition) is a linking word. In other words, think of a preposition as a bridge. You can go OVER the bridge, UNDER it, AROUND it, jump OFF it, run AWAY from it, crash your car INTO it, etc. The bridge analogy also works for explaining the purpose of a preposition's existance. It links two parts of a sentence, which is composed of a subject (thing) and an verb (what is done to/by said thing).

I don't usually make mistakes when I post (yeah, I'm an English bastard that way...), but what you don't see is what happens as I type my posts...

Sometimes I have dyslexic fits wherein I misplace some letters of a word. Most of them I usually fix (via proofreading myself) before I post. The few that get past me get fixed in the post-edit, so you'll see the typically-seen [Edited (DATE), (TIME)] stamped at the bottom of my post - that's when you know I made a mistake.

Its things like this that bugs me. The english language, it's a bastard of a language, bearing no true roots, it merely takes words from any other lauguage; bastardizes, and assimilates them. With all of the needless additions and non-sensical spellings, is it really all that unusual to see someone making mistakes over minor things, considering many members don't use english as their primary language?

I'll bet most people that read this very post might notice mistakes deliberately put in here, but does it really make it harder to read or frustrating to understand?

Granted, these are minor things you complained about, but I can understand what you say, and there are some cases where it's just plain hard to even read. A little proper capitalization and a period here and there could do wonders for some.

I can't say I'm annoyed by any errors, but I notice that it is pretty common that people write 'necessary' as 'neccesary'. (I recently figured that one out myself...)

I also wrote disappointing as dissapointing for a long time. And definitely as definately.
There are quite a few words I wrote incorrectly, and probably still do.

It's an unfortunate side effect of computers...people can't spell any more....
They also get lazy typing, and thus you get all sorts of horrible types of slang....

Ugh... don't remind me... The "Txt"-generation... Cellphone SMS... IRC chat... all these contribute to global illiteracy...

Those shortcuts are fine if they just stay in their natural environments, that sort of grammar does not work on a forum, or anywhere else but SMS and IRC.

English is the most logic and easy to learn languance I've seen so far...

It beats French, German and (My own languance) Dutch.

Most logic, no. Easy language, yes.

No paraphrasing and lack of full stops etc. allthough dosen't annoy me gives me the right to say f-off and come back when you can structure a sentence, though it may be simply I say please break it into paragraphs.

In short, spilit it up or I ain't reading it.

Also, overuse of 1337 and shortcuts. Message into msg I regualry use on XBL and H2 messages as I have very limited room, though mostly I type with full grammar.

This goes out the window on MSN though, speed > accuracy in my mind.

I failed 7th grade German but while I was paying attention German seemed easier than english

Something I find annoying is that, more often than not, most of the grammar mistakes are made by natural English speakers.

Many people find it annoying, but that spell checker is the reason I spell less words incorrectly, when I see a red line under a word that looks fine, I check out the dictionary and find out the truth.

In other words, I love the spell checker.

the reasons that many people make grammar mistakes that speak the english language is becuase they are southerners, me im just to lazy to type appropriatly. im getting a b in english but i dont understand why i need 4 years of english class if i already know it.

Same with Icelandic, you wouldn't believe the bullshit I'm forced to learn to finish high school.

French is horrible, I am gonna have to get a passing grade to finish high school in Gr. 9 and they are considering extending the requirments to Gr. 12! I wish I could learn something I would actually like to learn, like German. *sigh* How I wish that the British could have just kicked the French in NA out...so many problems would have been solved (no offense to the French people).

As for English, I agree that it seems like a useless class sometimes, we are forced to learn the same bullshit over and over and over, that we all already know! I wish they could do that with all the subjects, give us NEW things to learn instead of always making us review things that have been imprinted into our brains. Life sometimes seems like it would be much better without some of the stuff they push on us in school. Like piles of over-repetitive homework. I know we need some to press that stuff into our brains, but sometimes it is just strange!

German is just as hard as French from what I have heard. German has gender of nouns, four images, definitives; isn't it the same with French?

Every language is like that except Latin and some tribal languages. English just gets all the attention for it because so many people speak or know it. And English really is an easier language to learn because of its many roots, almost everybody will find some semblance of their own language in it. Learning German myself, I was surprised at how much English comes from Germanic roots.

And second languages are always easier to learn than the first; however, although you will actually learn faster, you also hit your "limit" faster, which is why it's so hard to be come fluent in another language.



I'm not sure about French, but German has:

-Four noun "genders": masculine, feminine, neuter, plural
-Four cases: nominative, accusative, dative (English just uses accusative here), genitive or "possessive"
-Different syntax: English example: I bought her the flowers on Monday.
..............................Translated German example: On Monday bought I her the flowers.
-Seperable verbs: many verbs have a prefix that you move to the end of the sentance, unless...
-"modal" verbs: verbs like "to want" force their object to the end of the sentance, and if it's a verb, it returns to its infinitive form, and seperable verbs keep their prefixes

German is almost exactly like Icelandic when it comes to grammar. We even use akkusativ in the same situations.

That's interesting. Do you have noun genders? If you do, do you have ridiculous numbers of article forms too? That's by far the worst part about German, learning when to use das, der, die, den, dem, denen, ein, eine, einen, einem...

...especially when your native language just has "the" and "a."

Compared to Icelandic, learning all the das, der, die; is easier than drinking water.

Wanna see 4 images of one noun in Icelandic?
Maður (a man)
Without definitives: Maður, mann, manni, manns
With definitives: Maðurinn, manninn, manninum, mannsins.

The entire noun changes when you use a different image as you can see, which doesn't happen at all in German to my knowledge. This happens often in Icelandic, probably dozens or even hundred+ nouns.

There is a reason Icelandic is believed to be one of the hardest languages you can attempt to learn.

Yeah, I think you win. Anyway, that does happen in German, but on a much smaller scale, and it's fairly rare. Der Herr becomes dem Herrn, for example.

Does Icelandic use its own alphabet, or is it just a few different letters?
