XYZ 'Sentry' Automatic Sentry Gun.

A small automatic turret which can be mounted on ceilings, floors and walls to defend certain points in the battlefield. This turret can shoot by itself thanks to an inbuilt AI software. The rapid firing gun attached to the XYZ Sentry shoots five bullets a sec doing 2 damage at the time. These bullets are extremely weak to shield, doing only 1 damage and a chance of 50% the bullet does no damage at all. Another thing to be aware of is that these turrets aren't heavily armored and only have 30 health. You can carry up to four Sentry turrets at the time. One found in each ammo pack.

Would that be useful? It sounds like it couldnt kill a fly with that kind of damage and health. It would need a higher ROF for that kind of damage I would think.

Well, it depends on its application. I like the idea of low health, as it would help prevent trench warfare. I do agree that 10 damage per second is a bit low, since 1 or 2 shots of almost anything coult take it out. However, if the pickup for this turret is common enough, damage would be justified. Wold this be a weapons that allows you to deploy turrets at the expense of ammo?

From the description I'd see this going into the grenade category with the Land mine and satchel charges. You set them up for area denial and/or early warning. I can imagine 4 of these rigged up in a corridor with the M50 cam rigged above it, so you can check out whats being shot at.
Bear in mind there are 2 turret mutes already, so you have to make things different than the Chaos UT sentry or the WoE sentinel. I think having a small, unobtrusive turret firing pistol sized ammo is a departure from the Aliens-like sentries we've seen before

Why not go all the way and make a Laptop Gun like in Perfect dark? - oh... I think 31 is plenty of guns for one mod. There is always something else you just have to add, but that's what other mods are for.

You can make the turrets have infinite ammo if they get ammo from somewhere. Like Skrith pistol has replenishing ammo...

I know something. They regenerate on ammo, but use them up faster. So it can fire all the time... after some shots it will drain refire rate because there isn't enough ammo.
Placing these wherever you like is the best part. So you can place them on walls, ceilings and dark corners.

This one is a cool concept. Having a few in well placed spots could be tons of fun. A mine like gun, I like that.

Balance will be important on these. They should be annoying but not quickly deadly. If they have a high damage rate they should have poor tracking skills. I would be in favor of lower damage and quick tracking. Nothing better then making you jump to aviod getting damaged. Also in favor of infinate ammo but with a recharge time give each one the abilty to do enough damage to really hurt a healthy target, then have a ten second recharge time.

They should also be fragile and go down easy, however give them a expolsion radius when they die like a small gernade. If you are close they will get you.

Fragile yes, but you might find 30 health is much too fragile for stationary objects. The turrets in onslaught had 450 health but being stationary meant they lasted as long as a bot in a pile of warlords once players and vehicles started getting close to them.

WoE sentinels had a whopping 1000 health but you still couldnt leave them for 15 seconds. (unless thourougly upgraded, then they rocked)

If they are going to be that weak then they must be quicker to produce.

Also what might these sentinels be designed like? If they are small, quiet and portable then 30 health might just suffice. WoE sentinels were big and obvious which is why they were destroyed quickly when overwhelmed.

I agree this should go along the lines of the grenades and mines. You grab one from the grenade spawn point and plant it somewhere. Nice and simple. The sentinel can simply ally with the team or person that plants it.

It must not replace any weapons and not require any additional weapons or pickups to deploy. I grew tired of having to collect all sorts of things around the map just to make a basic WoE sentinel. Things that could have been an important keg'o'health or shield (WoE sentinels replaced health pickups)

These Sentry guns are very, very small... Its like a small SMG with a robotarm attached to it on a base.
So you will have to aim properly to get these down with bullets, they aren't easy to hit targets, even if they're not moving.
Explosives would be the strongest thing against these turrets, as they have a wide radius and high damage.

Although I think these little turrets need to be able to survive 1 pineapple grenade...
And have high resistance against flame weapons...

i think id up the health to 50, the regenerating ammo would be cool, but that would be better done as an energy weapon not bullets...so what can be done there is just keep the same idea of bullets but just have the bullets be laser shots or w/e

for "fuel" there is always the idea of bioenergy created by small bacteria in a jar, or a small nuclear power plant...either one is viable since it is unreal

rockets, grenades, plasma... These things are dangerous to anything that holds still. Skirth rifles could be quite effective against a sentinel. But giving them a low profile is a good idea.

I wont recommend how strong they should be since if you increase the health then you must also lower availability for balance.

Can you freely slap them on walls and ceiling like you can with BX5 mines?

oops, just read your first post again. Yes, that's a neat way of making them less vulnerable to grenades

If you hold one in your hands, thinking of placing it. You can activate it in your hands with the secundairy fire.
You now have a weak but automaticly aiming & shooting weapon in your hands!

With changing the firemodes you could adjust the refirerate : damage ratio in 3 steps. So more damage, less refire. More refire, less damage. These would be fun:
1. 10 rounds a sec, 2 damage.
2. 5 rounds a sec, 4 damage.
3. 2 round a sec, 10 damage.
All 20 damage each second, but still different.

So it has replenishing ammo, it will be an energy-based weapon. The energy will be delivered by two batterypacks on the base of the turret. These are its weak point, but they are armored from the front side.

So it will be a bit like a low powered, fast firing shock rifle? Or more like a skirth rifle?

Also as a quirk to holding the senty in your hands it could shoot you in the face if it targets something behind you. So although it gives you a good aiming advantage its a dangerous practice.

I kinda like the turret holding idea; the chance that it shoots your head off trying to get the enemy behind you makes things a little more interesting. It also begs a new death message:

"Tyster pushed the wrong button on his auto sentry"

Maybe even more complex orders for the turrets... like shoot enemy mines, trip lasers, G5 rockets. So it can help your vehicle against rocket attacks. Also make sure all bugs of placing them on any vehicle goes away, as these are excellent defence for your tanks.

I've had another idea for this turret. A little camera inside it, so you can see where it is shooting at, and who is coming around the corner. The way to activate the screen would be by using the Special Key, and you can scroll your mouse wheel to switch between turret. And when you are looking trough one of your turrets, you can control your turret yourself by using the secundairy fire, usefull as you can aim at the head and the turret generally aims at the centre of a target.
Would also be nice to be able to change the firemode of the turret while viewing trough it.

I kinda like the idea of having turrets in-game, but I personally think that Chaos UT had the right idea. Instead of a bunch of weak turrets, there were a couple large turrets that replaced redeemer/painters. While I'd love to see Runestorm's take on it, you can always add in the Chaos turret unsing worm2k4 for now...

Yeah but Chaos UT turrets are big and unable to place on ceilings and walls.

These turrets may be small and weak, but they can do enough damage if they are placed in the right place.
A bad place to set them up would be in the middle of the field. As they are shooting 1 person and they get shot by another.
A good place to set them up is right above a door, so someone walks trough the door and gets hit in the head from above, getting headshots, which do more damage.

Another cool thing would be to be able to place them on Vehicles, so you trow some on your raptor as backturrets.

As I mentioned before from my experience with WoE sentinels;

big fat sentinels tend gather more attention on the battlefield, then they start gathering rockets. They are also harder to place on a vehicle as automated turrets, a feature I anticipate.

Small, discrete sentinels will do fine.

Plus I am liking the idea that they can be carried around by hand so they only need to be weapon pickups

Nothing sophisticated like ChaosUT's "beam-down-a-sentinel" or WoE's "collect-all-the-little-bits" methods
