A:Because it is a grenade of some sort.

B:More likely the ammo is hooked up by tubes to a energy gun.The ball is put in a 'cradle' and hooked up.

Walk right past key one
Kill all of blue team for key two
Out run tank fire getting to Orb
Insert key two into hole two
Insert business end of R9 into hole one
Pull trigger until the little B**** gives up the goods

The orb does remind me of the little electric balls in HalfLife 2 that followed you around and tried to give you an electric shock. Pretty frequent in the Highway 17 chapter.
