Which edition are you running, cause we haven't seen it, but then again we are running Business and Enterpise editions...although I didn't get it on the Ultimate I was messing around with at one stage....
Try and have a look where you turn it off, if there's an option there to "alert" you, otherwise check out the security center "change the way it alerts me" options (where you turn off the alerts for no virus/firewall etc. ) .

I would say Vista can't do something it wants to...I would check if you need a BIOS update (the BIOS manufacture's normaly list funny things like that under the OS compatbilities), otherwise check your power settings in the BIOS and check that ACPI is enabled.

Lastly, does pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL do anything when you get to that stage?

I'm getting class to eventually have a high degree in this sort of stuff, and to be honest i have no idea what it is either. My teachers neither, and boy, it is annoying. BIOS settings won't fix it, BIOS update isn't the solution either. And yes, an OS won't do anything out of itself, though 90% of the time, it seems like it is acting individually. Just because we don't know what the trigger is, doesn't mean it's an action decided all by itself Anyways to get back on the subject, alt+ctrl+del is another application, thus it cannot be runned. The only thing i'm allowed is to select icons and open the empty start menu. That's it.

Actualy, unlike the old days, CTRL-ALT-DEL has a very high priority if you press it...and if you can get to it, to launch the task manager, you can see what's running etc.

If you open the start menu, is the cmd box available to you? (the one right above the start button, where you type in to search for things, launch apps etc.) If it is, run explorer.exe and see what happens...

Otherwise, I think a nice, completly clean format and install would be a good way to go

No, it's most definite that the explorer process is screwing it up a little, but it's not allowing me to re-run the process. Like i said before, only thing i'm allowed to is to select stuff, i cannot run anything when it starts acting up like this.

High priority or not, ALT+CTRL+DEL does not run, it won't run anything.

This is on Windows Home Premium, where a bubble in the task bar always lets me know that I turned of UAC, which shouldn't be too surprising, I guess, since the Home edition is targeted for people who think that the computer is this magical thing that lets them check their e-mails on IE and type word documents on MS Office. Oh, and I think you asked about details about Vista going idle for a minute or so after telling it to shut off... I did some playing around and it seems to happen every time I log out or shut down. Sry, Cybrax, if it seems like I'm trying to use you as my personal IT support guru; not trying to do that... on purpose... as far as I know... I think... I should shut up now.

I was a strong opposer towards vista but now I'm a full fledged supporter. Give it time its strong points will overshadow its weak points soon. I got vista about a year ago and although my pc isn't strong enough to make full use of it, what I can use is great.

Ahh...It could very well be a "feature". MS is known for doing funny things with the home editions, and I haven't worked on a home edition yet.

Try me again later this year, I'm planning on doing the official MS exam for Vista towards the end of this year (I need to do it as part of the server upgrades for server 2008).

I got the Beta version and the full. They both sucked for gaming. For god's sakes, on Command & Conquer Generals and Battle For Middle Earth everything would explode 2 minutes into the game, and trigger instant loss! When I restarted Evil Genius recently, my save corrupted and it would crash at THE SAME EXACT POINT on one save, and the others would seemingly crash within minutes, and the saves weren't far apart, so, it still crashed at that point. Thankfully, I recently switched back to XP on my new computer.... And my NEW save didn't bug up at all, but at least I could make a more efficient base design using some info from guides. *Ranting on about Vista*

Well everyones gonna have to get used to vista soon. So just deal with it.

Yep, thats how I see it. As of now, I have no gripes with it. No compatibility issues related to Vista for me, only with my P.O.S. graphics card for my lap top. Although I do absolutely hate Vista's Office interface.

I just use open office insead of Vista's office. No gripes there.

Yea I like all these people who complain of all vistas compatibility issues, Ive never received ONE thats right no compatibility issues here a-holes!

Next to that, Vista is a €300,- Russian Roulette. It's unsure if it works on your system or not, and don't you even think about a refund. That's what makes Vista disgusting. I have it here, and i am one of the thousands of other unlucky users that have more compatibility problems than i could possibly bear.

At least you already have a copy, since the day will arrive that XP is no longer supported in the industry, at all.

Your welcome bud, don't take it personally but words cannot express the true anger I have for people who are hypocrites and do not fully understand the situation before spouting on about it. Now as I said before don't take it personally, I hated vista one time too but now what Ive been using it for awhile it really isn't that bad.

Echo, it seems to me like you fail to see the fact that there are people out there who do have problems with Vista or any kind of software. Your luckyness is an isolated case, it doesn't reflect other people's experience in any way at all. He has problems with the OS; that gives him a good reason to be unhappy with it, and gives you no reason to categorize him as an asshole for that matter.

Of course there are people who dislike the OS for reasons that have no grounds, but Chavez is not one of those from my point of view.

(sorry for all caps!) but from MY point of view, I used it at Voteck everyday for the first year I have been over there and I don't care for it too much. some of my classmates over there said they don't like it too much either. they would rather use XP over Vista.

Just wait another 5 years and we'll be talking about VIsta the same way we're talking about XP, now.

I can just imagine someone 5 years down the road saying the same about Vista as we say about XP today.

Very true. Vista will go through the same type of evolution as XP. But then again we don't know how MS will do this time in improving the OS, take WinME or Win95 for examples.
