Some of the more modern versions of these rounds can do serious damage to tanks (an M1A2 was taken out via a hit to the turret ring), but the real killer is the RPG-29.

You cant have reactive armour on tank treads since the weight of the tank combined with even a small pothole would set it off.

Of course the launcher would be updated over the course to be more futuristic, but the principles behind it would stay the same.

I don't think you commonly find tanks deployed with no infantry support, especially nowadays where everything is fought in urban areas.


Besides, the efficacy of the RPG7 vs modern tank armor is pretty much irrelevant, considering tanks should probably have considerably more powerful armor 300 years in the future, assuming they haven't all been replaced by super giant robots by then. There would also be considerably more powerful anti-tank missiles, assuming we haven't moved on to lasers or rail guns by then.

Yeah but as soon as a guy pops around a corner and snaps off a rocket do you think an infantryman can stop that rocket flying through the air at the tank? No they cant, them rockets are in the air for less than 3 seconds before they hit a target. If anything the infantry are just more targets, also what if the Rocketgunner is in a concealed position? They wouldnt EVEN SEE the attacker in time to react.

Morale of the story, infantry doesnt mean your tank is 100% protected from other infantry... Especialy the ones with Rocket propelled granade launchers.

I never said anything about an infantryman stopping a rocket in mid-air. What I was more referring to was the "infantry moving in to place charges" bit, which would be very difficult with adequate infantry support on the tank's side.

Besides, the situation you described involves disabling the tank with a well-placed shot to the treads, requiring a fairly close range, proper positioning, and ideally a stationary target. The first shot would alert everyone to your presence, and if you miss, that tank's not going to remain stationary.

In any case, discussing these hypotheticals aren't going to get us anywhere. There are too many variables to consider, and it isn't really relevant to the topic anyway.

"Outdated" is an odd choice of a word. No matter how long of a time passes by, a gun is always capable of killing. And in the BW universe, that uses primitive armor system seen from that time's point of view, it wouldn't be so far fetched to have modern guns in the arsenal.

Wasnt part of the story where they had to bring back older projectile weapons because the plasma weapons couldnt get through the skrith shields? So as long as you add some futuristic flare to them i see no reason why not to use older designs. They already did it with the m16 series and that looks plenty cool and futuristic.

Yes, but there's no reason that they would turn to weapons that are old even today. I mean, the M16 was basically designed in the 1950s. They would create new conventional bullet-firing weapons using current (by 24th century standards) design and aesthetics. I doubt their laser guns all looked like M16s and MP5s and TEC-9s and whatnot.

Like I said, I wouldn't mind if the weapons behaved exactly the same as weapons of today, because those are fun. But I'm kinda taken out of the moment when a gun that's supposed to be in use 300 years in the future is an exact replica of one used today, with very minor aesthetic differences. Although the Fifty-9 is pretty cool...

See the thing is though after the m16 and ak-47 (which im still waiting for) nothing really revolutionary has hit the firearms world in the past 50-60 years. Firearms like the Ak-47 and the M16 are good platforms to design firearms off of, i could see someone taking an Ak-47 and upgrading it so that it could survive the next 300 years (for an ak as long as there is ammo there will be the AK-47) Or the M16 same deal.

The thing about designing a new firearm is that you have to figure out all sorts of things like ergonomics, uses, training, ammunition etc. With the Ak and M16 the governments of the world have had 60 years to perfect these two weapons, a great example is the Israeli Galil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMI_Galil its a completely overhauled Ak-47, them are very accurate, very reliable, durable, good ergonomics. Its like a hybrid between the ak-47 and the m16.

Many gun designers are looking backwards because they realize the old stuff still works very very well.

I do think the submachine guns need some work because some countries are dropping pistol caliber submachine guns because 1. they are dead 2. they have assault rifles that fire a more potent round and are the same size and wieght.

Another thing about the story, i thought they switched everything over to plasma technology and neglected projectile weapons up until the point when they needed them to combat the skrith, if this is the case then they wouldnt have time to design new firearms in the middle of a war for survival they would go back to the firearms they already have the designs for, make the necessary changes, build them, and then issue them to the soldiers that need them.

Just read the thing about the RPG 29 and thats rather impressive that the soldier managed to penetrate the FRONT armour of the challenger tank. For BW its kind of a plain jane though, needs to have a little bit more tech looking stuff on it.

The discussion is actually relevant to the topic. Militaries of the far-future would simply not be using cosmetically modified M16s and MP5s and whatnot for various reasons, hence no RPG7s. Although a majority of BW's weapons already break that rule, so I dunno.

Why are we looking to copy existing weapon designs? You should look at the evolution of current weapons and new weapons in development and attempt to project that into the future.

Besides, there are other, more effective man-portable anti-tank rocket launchers out there. The RPG7 is just very cheap, very simple to use, and quite available.

The reason i look at copying existing weapons is because thats what todays current militaries are doing today, most modern designs that are being released are just updated and modified versions of older rifles. Since when did it become a rule that militaries wouldnt use cosmeticaly modded weapons?

The reason its so hard to make new designs is because there has been A LOT of things designed that never really went anywhere, thus a new license would be needed to develop a weapon if it shares anything with an older firearm that it may share not a single relation to.

Plus there is so much risk involved when designing a new weapon that if it isnt accepted a whole company can go under. Or a person can loose everything they put into the design because it is VERY costly to design and build a new weapon.

Sure there may be other ones available but if its to complicated to figure out no one is gonna want it.

As of now, I don't think there is a huge need for radical new weapons tech and designs, but you can bet there will be in the future. It would be impossible to accurately predict what weapons would look like even 50 years from now, but that doesn't mean we have to stick with the ones we have now. A little imagination would be welcome here.

Well we already know that submachine guns are a dead technology, a few new rifles from Heckler & Koch are coming out, the SIG556 from switzerland, russia had that new rifle the Abakan AN-92, America has that new 9MM cartridge coming out, china has a new armour peircing round as does russia. So its not like new things are not happening its just taking a while for them to get a foothold.

hell, there are western arms in BW so why not this RPG? at least give a reason other than being outdated

i think that if we put this in it will need at least 1 cool modification, so as to set it apart from the original.

probably In the future someone will do that weapon in ut2004. believe me.

Maybe BW for UT3 will have a weapon like this. For ut2k4, Sgt. Kelly is already making a weapon similar but it still looks like a G5.

If I stopped being so damn lazy, I'd have made the RPG7 already...
