Russia doesn't give a flying **** about the interests of its (real or imagined) citizens, no government ever does. It's all about power & control (of people, territory, resources); the South Ossetians are just pawns in a cynical chessgame.

Also, this conflict once again teaches us that countries, especially the smaller ones, need to be a) economically autonomous, and b) have some kind of WMD capabilities, otherwise they'll be at the mercy of imperialist scumbags like Russia, China, and the US, or sanctimonious idiots like the EU. Not globalism but automation-driven, WMD-guarded autarky is the wave of the future. When you can produce everything yourself, and have the power to reduce your enemies' cities to post-apocalyptic wastelands, you can basically tell the rest of the world to go **** itself. Your territory, your rules. Now THAT is freedom.

You realize that is impossible, right? The way resources and land are divided, there is no way every small country could ever be completely self-sufficient and on-par with its neighbors.

Also, I don't see how "more nukes" exactly solves the problem here. We have more than enough to end civilization as we know it many times over. Are you suggesting we start handing out nuclear weapons to small nations in unstable, unsafe regions for protection?

as i read what people think about this conflict, the more i'm amazed that some people still really believe what the russian authorities are telling
and it almost shocks me how some people underestimate the consequences of this conflict.

Hello Comrades! I read it in the paper the day it was printed. I was honestly shocked by Russia's quick decision to mobilize any military forces. Because honestly if Russia went to war with lets say NATO I don't believe they could sustain and long term war. Lets be honest here, Russia is in no position to goto war with anyone. Its barely got its economy off the ground right now. Personally I feel Russia has made amazing leaps in the way its government is handled and its attempts to capitalize.

Well, lets just say that Russia do not want to piss off NATO.

I heard on the news today that Georgia put an end to all political connections with Russia. It will be interesting to see what happens between them after that.

McCain (U.S. presidential candidate) just mentioned this incident. I don't think I heard him make any promises of American involvement if he was elected, but he did say: "Bad Russia. Lower your head in shame."

I found this to be very interesting when i heard it, did some research on it as well.

Apperently there are rebbles in Ossetia that russia supports and has citizens theres. Georgia attacked first trying to oust the rebbles and take back land it lost a LONG time ago, russia went in booted them out. As of right now Russia has begun to pull out soldiers from some of the towns they captured.

Lately russia has been focusing mainly on its military, spending loads of cash on it. I think the UN would be hard pressed to fight a war with russia, because the nations that are not UN would more than likely side with russia (aka china then we are all boned) it would be a very costly war that no one would really win.

PPl....dont wanna to insult anyone but i'm not sutre if someone here could really talk about this. South OSetia and Abhasia was given to Georgia by Stalin. He was a Georgian. Georgia took the Land but they dont really wanted the people on it. So first big accident started 1991 as a georgian President said the three words "Georgia for Georgians". Soon the Georgian Artillery stared to wipe down towns and villiages in Osetia. Russia kicked georgians a$$ outta of there and both sides sighned a contract. It was a contract that aloowed Russia to place their Peacekeepers in OSetia. At 08.08.2008 Georgia brought the COntract and started to bomb Osetia again. So its their fault.

If you think that Russsia had tro go to UN instead of invading Georgia i would laugh. The UN had enough time to clear this conflict. Georgian millitary would simply wipe out the 50000 people in Osetia.
