I forgot who said this (maybe Mark Rein), but artificial stupidity is a big part of artificial intelligence.

The whole point of AI is to create an artificial intelligence; give a human the impression that the computer is "thinking" and making decisions on its own. I'd say artificial stupidity is just a way of describing poorly engineered/programmed AI. And that is what UT2's AI is; stupid. It doesn't do any learning whatsoever, is unable to use a map's geometry to its advantage, etc. Even community-made Quake 2 bots learn the maps they run around in.

uh.... Epic AI programmer isn't the guy that made quake bots?

I have no idea, there is more than one bot mod for Quake 2.

here is an article that tells how Epic recruited Steve Polge, as the AI programmer. he made the Reaper bots for quake.
well, it was in 199x, before Unreal 1 release. today I think that epic don't have just only one guy on AI...

It sure would be funny if it took 2+ programmers to make such a primitive piece of AI for a game made almost ten years after Quake's release.

Actually, what is meant by Artificial Stupidity is that it is easy to make something behave "perfect" in programming, ie, always know where your enemy is, never miss your shots, etc.

The tough part is making them make mistakes, do something stupid (we aren't talking about getting themselves stuck in the corner, either), and all the other stuff that makes players human.

That's right, even quake 3's nightmare bots don't do mistakes, unless you take advantage of their predictable movements (when health is low they'll always run and get health always knowing where the health item is located)
If you walk straight to a certain direction they will always hit you, the strategy there then is not to just aim well and dodge shots, but also to be *less* predictable for them...

And that's another important fact, how predictable or not and how autonomous they can be, also regarding tactics, team tactics, etc

Nope, but I'm considering taking a course on AI. However, I think it'l be on a lower level, talking about things like pattern recignition instead of bot navigation and behavior.
