Of the two core activities in Viscera—mopping up blood and collecting trash—the most fun is clearly had with the mop. Its quickness and immediate visual feedback really makes it the more enjoyable and rewarding task. In an effort to increase the enjoyability of garbage collection, I suggest a new tool:

The garbage skewer. (Also called a garbage spike, spear, etc.). This tool is essentially a small spear which is typically used by roadside workers to collect litter. The worker stabs the spike into trash to create a 'garbage kebab' which may then be emptied into a garbage bag.

In Viscera, this tool could be used to quickly collect several gibs or pieces of trash. Left click to skewer, right click to empty. Designed for space janitors, it could feature a serrated blade to better grip bleeding gibs and a spring-loaded cleaning mechanism to wipe the trash off its end. In similar form to the blood-soaked mop, the skewer could cause its gibs to spurt blood on each stab. The skewer would likely not work on bullet casings.

Some additional considerations:
  • Some gibs/garbage could require more 'skewer space' (e.g. a torso > chip bag) and thereby create a puzzle element; how does the player most efficiently stack these pieces?
  • The skewer would make an effective weapon if that is ever a necessity.
  • The addition of new tools could allow for tool management where players must share limited amount of equipment or choose which tool they will use before the game (this is more co-op oriented).

What are your thoughts? Is the garbage skewer a worthy addition to the Viscera world?

I like this idea, but it seems too out of place.

If anything I would say to add a Dustpan and Broom for smallish organs, trash, and ammunition casings.

Maybe throw in the skewer after first few levels as an attachment option or craftable.

I think it has a grisly, space vibe going on. Granted, the images I provided do not convey that. Why do you say it is out of place?

The dustpan is certainly an iconic tool for janitors. I agree with its suitability for collecting trash and bullet casings but wonder about its use on gibs. Would the broom's bristles get bloody and necessitate a cleaning? That would be an interesting mechanic whereby the broom becomes bloodied by touching gibs and spreads more blood until washed.

Whatever the case may be, the garbage collection in Viscera can be immensely improved. Allowing the player to pick up multiple objects at once can make garbage collection just as rewarding as mopping.

I would absolutely love to see both of them added to the game, it would definitely make collecting a lot easier!
