One of the creepiest things I found about the Santa cleanup were the elf bodies, partly because of the faces and partly because the bodies were very child like (I have kids). The heads with features on the new levels such as Caduceus? Not so much. Personally I'd prefer only skulls or suited/helmeted heads, or if you're going to have faces on them make them twisted in terror (e.g. Half-Life 2 zombie with the crab removed). Anyone else have an opinion? |

My impression was that "creepy" is the whole point of Viscera Cleanup Detail. I had a review of it on another site praising the game for just that. One of its strongest points is just how quickly it can desensitise you to the gore and horror of it all, forcing you to look at things from a practical perspective. For instance, I take a lift up to the second floor of the lab, only to be greeted by a horror show of blood and dismemberment. Instead of being appalled at the violence of it all, my first thought was trying to do a mental count of how many buckets and crates I would need to clean it up. Games like Viscera require a certain amount of "suspension of disbelief" and putting yourself in the shoes of the character you're portraying. Stuff like this would be horrible in real life, but this isn't real life. The empathetic dissonance is part of why it works. I wouldn't treat Viscera like I would an actual real-life situation, as to me at least that feels rather unthinkable. |

But that's my point, the heads should be creepy and instead they look more like shop dummies/mannikins. You're certainly right about the desensitisation though, my response to that same part of Evil Science was "what a hassle it's going to be carrying buckets and bins up here", and I can't help but refer to the intestine pieces as 'sausages'. |
