Post subject:  Friend unable to connect

So here a strange issue that is different from the others.

We are 3 people, myself 1, my friend 2, and my brother 3

When 3 Host, 1 and 2 can join
When 2 host, 1 and 3 can join
When 1 host, 2 can join, but 3 cannot.

And all 3 of us have different ip and machines.

My brother is unable to connect to me, when he try to connect, nothing happen, and one minute later he get an error that he cannot connect.
Yet if he host, i can join him just fine instantly with less than 10 ping.

We both have our router properly configured, with port open, since our common friend can join both of us.

We have all UDK.exe whitelisted by the firewall (again friend can join so we know it's working)
We can play any other game just fine, such as terraria and other, both direct connect and steam connect, using the same port 7777

We both changed the UDKEngine.ini to IpDrv.TcpNetDriver, tried both with steam running and not.
We both tried hamachi, both with and without the ini changed, and both with and without steam running.
Both of us installed Microsoft .NET 4.5

And my name show on the friend game list, but again, clicking it, result on the same nothing happening then the error message.

We have tried every solution on both steam and runestorm forum using every knew term possible about similar issue, in which none of them worked.

Again, we are 3 different people, each of us can connect to each other, at the only exception my brother can not connect to me only. And no firewall or router rules was set that prevent us to do so, since again, both terraria and VCD are both allowed on the firewalls, whitelisted, and using the same port (not running in same time of course)

As an it engineer who do networking, i just don't understand how is thing even possible. When everything else work just fine, just this particular case is puzzling me.

You're not the only one puzzled. :-\

In the majority of cases people can connect to friends fine, and at most might need some port forwarding.

Then there are a few who can't get it to work with either of those and have to instead use Hamachi or another similar service.

After that, there is the Steam Bypass as a last resort.

Then... there are the rare few who cannot connect no matter what. We have never been able to find an explanation for this ridiculous and horrible behaviour.
Most of the core system areas of the engine we are using (UDK) is inaccessible to us, leaving us with no way to troubleshoot possible solutions in the engine's base code.

Needless to say, it's incredibly frustrating. Though we have managed to make some higher level changes recently, and that should be in the next update. I'm not sure if it'll help yet.

The best advice I can give seeing as you've tried everything imaginable, is to host on your brother's machine for the time being. Is that suitable, or is it not powerful enough?

I is suitable, but then i would like to propose a minor change for the incoming update.
When you finish cleaning a map. You are redirected to the host office.
So the items we collect are only available to the host itself.
Meaning that in my case, my brother will get the new bob documents, and not me who already collected 3.

So while this is great to be able to visit your host office, it would be really nice to be able to have a duplicate of the janitor chest in our own office.

I do understand this might be complicated, because of how the code is currently done. when you leave your office, or even without going there, your trunk and all the space above is "moved". When finishing a map, on checking, this space is updated with the one from the finished map.

As much as updating everyone trunk would be easier, i do understand the issue is that if i left an item on it, it would be overide with the host one.

So there would be multiple way to approach the issue.

1. Add the finished map content and pile it with the non host one at the office. (expecting some collection boom as both initial items and new one collide into each other
2. spawn them somewhere else on the office, but then it would forever duplicate the existing ones as currently no system check if you were the host or not.
3. upon joining the host server, have your own janitor trunk apear next to you in the map, so when the map checkin, you get the content back to your office. in the case you leave the map and never check in, the original one in the office would not be updated. But again, spawn joining a host map would duplicate items if the container is emptied ont he ground on each login.

So the best solution would be, like the crate area, design a janitor trunk area, where items deposited here are sent to everyone's office.

I do understand any of those solution come without duplicate or heavy coding change.
But it would solve a lot of issue about achievement, collectable items and who get what.
Because if you always join hosts, you never get to keep anything in your own office.

If you think the idea is great, but don;t have the manpower to execute it, i would be more than obliged to write that portion of code for you and of course for free.

So let me know.

Aye, indeed. It would be more suitable to have "personal" transfer trunks that allow each player to keep things separately. However, such a system is a bit of an undertaking as you say.

Nevertheless it is on the list, so maybe we'll get to it one day.

Currently we've ensured that players do get collection(and other) achievement progress if they are connected to the host, awarding them just the same for their accomplishments. Of course, without the actual items in your personal office, you cannot get the achievement without going all the way with the host(or joining their office if they have already collected everything).
