Post subject:  Possible Translocator replacements

I searched the forums and didn't find a similar topic so I created this thread in which I'd like to collect some suggestions on how the translocator could be replaced with something that fits the BW theme more, but without breaking its functionality, as lots of maps require it to reach higher ground or to cross gaps too big for a dodgejump.

My suggestions:

1. Jet-boots (jetpack wouldn't work as BW has so many weapons with backpack-attachements). When pressing the Xloc button, you'll make a big rocket-propelled jump (limited energy that lasts only a second or two, so you can't really fly, but reach heights similar to ones reachable with the Xloc. Pressing and letting go of the button in rapid succession won't get you as high as keeping it pressed, but quite far instead. It can also be used to slow down a fall. When the button isn't pressed, the energy recharges, obviously.
Of course extensive balancing would be required in order to keep the thing useful in some special situations or to reach certain areas only, or else BW-UT would turn into the next Tribes...

Possible problems:
- Players who exploit this feature would literally fly through the map. Since UT is already quite floaty, this might be even more annoying than constant dodgejumping. But on the other hand, excessive Xloc-ing is even more annoying, because its hard to predict a shot when the targets keeps on disappearing at random.

2. Grappling hook. No explanation needed.

Possible problems:
- Some areas can be reached via Xloc but not via hook, because there is no point the hook can attach to (rooftops for example).
- Chaos UT (best grapple ever) and Unreal4Ever2k4 already have similar stuff, so it wouldn't be very unique.

3. Anti-Gravity device. Changes the player's movement to low-grav style, enabling him to jump higher and fall slower.

Possible problems:
- Using it would turn the player into an easy target, because of the slow air movement.
- Again, not a unique idea, as Chaos UT already has a gravity belt (though it is a pickup there).

Looking forward to more ideas, I'm really interested in what you guys come up with.

Greetings,
Doc Shock

Hmm... 1. could be kinda like used for the UTC Marines (think CnC3's Zone Troopers for this one), 2. for the Outworld planets (not so teched up as UTC), and 3. for the Skirth (eh.... they need one)? Just thinking of PA.

Yeah, the only reason I play ChaosUT2 is FOR that grapple hook. Anyone know of a mut that adds that to UT without use of CUT2?

I would say to have an alternate weapon altogether for the translocator.

Something like a heavy teleportaion cannon that can be used for offensive purpouses and for quick escapes.

You point and click and the machine teleports you to that location. If you point at a person you teleport into them. Though it would have to have distance limits.

I kinda like the three ideas Doc posted, although the jet pack would definitely have to be a back pack and not boots.

Several reasons for this; if the jets were in your boots, you have a weird balance and slight foot movements could mean a flight plan 12 metres into the ground. :P

On your back, the propulsion is close to your center of mass, giving you better balance and control.

Plus, that's the thing about the back packs, they offer balance. Would you really like to see someone jetting around with a lightning gun or minigun? It'd be a scary sight! :P

Plus, you know, rocket boots would just look silly. :P

For the grappling hook, I recommend moseying on over to DK's spike launcher thingamajig.

Or go with something a bit more down to earth and give them an actual grappling hook; no automated powered pulley, just hand power and a limited range. If you want to climb up higher you do so at a fairly slow rate, using muscle power.

Not a truly innovative idea, but it is one that seems to have been overlooked many a time, and I'd personally like to see it sometime. Plus its a nice, simple thing, perfect for less wealthy merc groups. ;)

As for the anti-grav device... well, that just seems too much like the Chaos grav-belt...

Propulsion for jetpacks would be very inconvenient.

Eh, I'm sure they can find ways to keep the flames from roasting your arse, assuming they use flames, that is. ;)

Why not a blue grenade you can trow away, press a button and hop ur over there. Just like translocator but then in the BW Grenade form.

I'm sure there are plenty of mods out there that add grappling hooks, but does this Half-Life mod you speak add a grappling hook like how I described? If so I might want to check it out, haven't really seen a traditional grappling hook in a game before, might be interesting.

Yes, I'm sure there is, but what we are talking about is a possible BW equevilent. :)

The me votes for a grappling hook, as long at it isn't ChaosUT style.

There was a weapon thread for something similar to the grappling hook, called the Hyper Needle Cannon or something like that. It had two lines, one running forward and one back, so you could cross small canyons easily or use it to airlift vehicles to your allies stuck in the field by attaching one end to say a Scorpion, the other to a Raptor and then pressing use to leave it there like a deployed machinegun.

*Ah-choo~!!!*

Gaah~!!! Damn my cold's getting worse...

Anyhoo... if you want a traditional Grapple Hook, Ninja Rope will fit the bill nicely...

Rocket boots/backpack for me.
Then again they sorta do have a jetpack...a punctured flame thrower tank.

Whee!!

Yeah, but would you purposefully tell your team mate to puncture your Flamer (thus destroying it) just to give you an airlift...?

I don't think so...

Why not? If you throw it away before it explodes, you can use it to get to higher areas.

Actually... now that you mention it I think we got a new tactic for para-trooping.

Damn those bots for taking all the aircraft...

Then you just wasted a perfectly good weapon that can net you more frags than... let's say, that Damage Amp on the unreachable platform in Facing Worlds Classic...

It just doesn't make sense.

Makes sense to me, there are like, 4 other perfectly good weapon you can kill with (assuming you're playing loadout), just switch to one of them. ;)

But anyway, we need to get back on topic. ;)

yeah... We need something which makes you reach higher points that fits BW style!

And I think we need a BW Teleport Grenade. Which has a power bar which will be drained a bit when using the Teleport grenade. And the power bar slowly recharges.

the way the grapling hook works in the half life mod is you press a certan keybind and it shoots the grapling hook and i forgot to mention you can cloak

the way cloaking works is whane you croutch your fully coaked the faster you go the more visable
you get

I got a question regarding your telenade. Do you just get one unit, or does teleporting use it up? I think maybe if got one per spawn, sort of like the M50 camera, and you could only pick it up manually if you wish to retrieve it would be cool. Interesting idea by the way.

I'm just not too terribly fond of the teleporting ideas...

Maybe you trow the grenade on an edge, and it works like a grapling hook?
Trowing it would be more fun than shooting it like a gun. Requires more skill to get it right.

Maybe if you give it stats just like a grenade, ie, you can cook it, and when the timer runs down you teleport to it.

Maybe.
