Maybe it should be about 80% body height (covers you when crouching, allows lower leg shots when standing, held horizontally when sprinting), and only to the left or right sides (depending on side it's held on). It should be dual-wieldable with light weapons (or itself for full frontal coverage). It should also weigh a lot, have about 300 hp (or at least be destroyable by normal weapon fire), and maybe absorb some (not all) of the damage of explosions. I could see this as being balanced, especially if the fists were added (to prevent ammo-less people from being useless). |

This would be pretty cool to see. Should definitely be destroyable. A nice touch for this could be a shield bash, methinks. Perhaps whenever you bring the shield down you perform the shield bash? The attack should do little damage but should be pretty effective at knocking people away from you, and will give a bit of offense if you were able to dual wield them (which is something I'd love to see by the way ).

I love the idea of having shields in BW,and the shield bashing idea! We could have: > Riot Shields > Ballistic Shields > Futuristic Energy Shields > A really futuristic Skrith Plasma Shield >A mountable shield, that could be stuck it in the ground for cover, like a Pavise or Mantlet, but lets you have both hands free,it would be destroy able, and you could take it by pressing use. >A an artifact-like shield with alien properties, not magic though, with Skrith or Crayo properties. >And maybe something silly like a piece of cardboard, it may not sound effective, but it sure will confuse your opponent for a few seconds
The shields could have there own class in loadout too! |

when we do our shield (whenever that might be), then it'll be fair.. won't cover all of you, be covered in spikes, nd as such can be used for ramming, be destructable, and of course not protect against heavy calibre, high powered weapons

Yeah, thats one shield, but its also a bit of a super weapon too. I'd prefer to have some shields used just for that, as well as your weapon. Glad to hear you guys will make a shield though, should be pretty awesome.

so how would a shield work in bw would it bu an upgrade that you pick up or does it take up a spot in the load out |

Dunno. I personally think it'd be best as a slot in Loadout, probably best in the melee slot. |

That could work too. But of course, that would all probably be configurable with loadout anyways.
I still think it should eventually be destroyed though. If .50 cal rounds can penetrate it like you say, wouldn't enough of them eventually weaken the shield to the point of being rather useless? Still, even if it is indestructible, I do like your idea on how it gets shaken around and becomes hard to handle under heavy fire. That sounds pretty balancing. But, if it is damageable, maybe you could pick up armour shards or something similar to help patch it up? This could kinda make it a bit less than indestructible, but could be maintained and repaired. Also, on the note of it being damageable, small arms and such should do no damage, but heavy attacks like from large calibres, rail guns, and direct explosive attacks should do something, don't you think? And another question, does Kevlar melt easily? I've been wondering that for some time, dunno why though.

Ooh... Gotcha. I misread it.
Hmm... if it does melt at around that point, it seems like a flamer could do some damage and a Skrith weapon most probably will, but then again, I'm not too familiar with the Celsius system, so I could very well be over/under-estimating that, assuming you are correct at that number. |

0 celsius is something like 260 degrees kelvin... right? I am right if kelvin has no -10 degrees heat.
anyways, shields would be fun, but they should make you slower. Placeable stuff is also very fun, first placing a shield with a shooting hole in the middle, then a turret behind the shield XD |

Another option would be to take the riot shield from junkwars, modify its defense values, and add it as a duel wieldable item. use the swap key to bring it up out of your dual wield options. move it to the offhand - swapping would switch the dual wieldable weapons on the primary hand. Primary fires weapon, altfire blocks with the shield. Weapon still being in the primary hand, it would still be effected by the fire selector toggle. Modify defense values of the shield to have heavier weapons penetrate it. Or, if you want to be really cute, have it have its own health rating and eventually shatter, like in Red Faction / Mars Wars. Determine the relative 'value' of the shield by which default slot it is set to in loadout. I would pick the secondary slot, personally. Just a thought on a different approach. i'll leave off getting the melee weapons involved in dual wielding as a seperate topic. Shield / knife, knife / pistol, anyone? |

Placeable shields would be truly awesome.
As for the various temperatures, I'd say a flamer could quite easily tear through a Kevlar shield in that case, as well as a skrith energy weapon. That'd be a great way to counter the heavily armoured units. As for the taking the Riot shield from JW, that sounds like a good idea, but in a coding sense, I don't know if it'd be any easier doing that than to just simply make a whole new thing... |

Cool! But... this sounds a little too tough to be balanced for a game.
If a buying system was ever implemented, this could work quite well, as it'd take quite a bit of money to buy, but I dunno, right now something as powerful as Dragon Skin seems like it might not be too wise to add, unless there was a definite way of cracking this shell (other than with something like one specialized weapon). |
