I know a really cool feature for Ballistic weapons, bullets bouncing off floors and walls under a certain angle.

Could turn out to be a fun feature. If someone is hiding behind a sloped wall, with only his head visible, you just shoot to slope and the bullets bounce into his head XD not that that will happen often.

It would be realistic too, as I just don't see a bullet smashing into a wall dead centre with a hitting angle of 1 degree.

On a similar note, I'd like to see some deflection with bullet penetration. A bullet would probably not fly straight through wood or concrete.

Hitscan can't change directions on the fly, as far as I know.

I imagine it would require an additional trace for each ricochet/deflection, but it's certainly possible. I mean the shield gun already deflects shock rifle beams.

Well with ricochets, they need be shot at Steel, Rock, solid surfaces. It can't just be shot at the grass or the wood, it would absorb the shot.

That's actually another thing I would like to see. Most of these weapons wouldn't penetrate a half inch of steel, but a half-inch of wouldn't be too much trouble. The bullets should recognize what kind of surface they're penetrating.

How accurately bullets detect surface types depends on how good of a job the mapper did in giving each surface it's correct type.

Yeah, weapons do recognize what they're hitting, its just, as Bjossi said, a matter of the mappers accurately getting custom textures labeled.

Well, yes, they obviously recognize it from the different impact effects and decals, but the performance doesn't change. It has no effect on how bullets pass through them.

Although, I'm not sure how you'd handle penetration through two different surfaces.

Like hell it doesn't effect how they pass through them. Maybe the changes aren't extreme enough, but it does effect penetration power.

if mappers are stupid enough to make their own textures but give them the wrong properties then its their fault.

I never use custom made textures, only from other maps xD but I'd check for the properties and most textures I use are from the stock UT2k4 stuff.

But yeah I can imagine a bullet not bouncing off dirt so quickly.

Oh, hey. It does. Oops.

The numbers are kind of weird, though. Dirt is twice as penetrable as flesh and wood.

I like this idea of bullet deflection. A couple mods for Half Life have this feature and it's pretty neat.

I would be verry nice to have that and it would increase the usage of cover and change the game into a more tactical and trikyer game. Also there could be some nice new deathmessages and awards.
