Anyways, not sure how did miss this thread, but power armor and mechs could be also nice and fun as vehicles.

Also, a bit weird may be, but may be also you can grab yourself on a mech leg, like the player is visible on hellbender, so you can transport up to 4 players on a 2 legged mech.
A pilot, a weapon one (proper name for this?), and two pessengers one on each leg that may be even can shot normally with player weapon?

Or grab yourself on a mech of the opposing team leg and start sticking explosive packs

Back on power armor, may be some heavy weapons that can only be used with those suits due to size and/or weight.
Would like to see tanks that cant be shot by little guns, and see some power suit weapons that shot powerful enough rounds to face tanks where mobility has the upper hand. Something like intermediate between vehicle and foot player. Not as powerful as a vehicle, but more powerful than a foot player, with the bonus of almost as mobile as a foot player.

In any case, nice to know those might have a place in a future version. Seeing the work on weapons I'm sure those will be done good ones.

Quake 3 Arena is a fast action tournament game, with gothic and futuristic styled maps. Nothing like the story line of Quake.

Anyways, The cryon really aren't much like the strogg at all. One similarity is that they re creatures of both biological and mechanical composition, but thats about the limit.

Strogg:
Harvest flesh from other races
Weapons are typically seperate from strogg
Used solely for combat-like roles

Cryon:
They grow their stuff from scratch, no recycled body parts
Weapons consist of organic and metallic components
Grow units for any purpose, be it transportation, ammo, weapons, soldiers, probably structures even.

A good use between strogg and cyron...

Really, I don't think a mechanical reconstruction of an animal would fit in BW or UT2004.

I was thinking of Matrix: Revolution mechs... They're boxy, and tank looking (like mechwarrior), yet they're not that huge like Armored Cores or Gundams. They have an open cockpit, so you can kill the pilot with a well placed shot. And their armaments should be chainguns (with overheat limit), and plasma rifle (projectile should look like the shock rifle orbs, but red and steams when it comes in contact... like a melting effect. And it should have an overheat limit).

Mecha Robotics are always fun in a game, but those from the Matrix fit in BW very well. As you can be shot out of your cockpit and it isn't a full armored heavy block walking around.

An open cockpit would make it useless. You're just asking for a sniping, like with Halo's Scorpion tank (also open cockpit).

In order to use it without getting your braincase emptied, you had to drive backwards the whole time.

Open cockpit isn't entirely useless. Think of it sorta like a slow moving turret. It'd be great as a stable weapons platform, but not as actual armour. I think it could work, but that would simply be one variety of several that should be implemented.

It would really be too easy to snipe someone out of it if it's both slow and open. The Scorpion's driver is completely vulnerable from the front, but since it moves so fast it's harder to hit. If you're going to make something vulnerable to fire, you have to give it some speed and agility, like the Scorpion and Manta. Conversely, if it can soak up a lot of damage, it should be easier to hit, like the Goliath and Paladin.

EDIT: And currently, slow vehicles are completely useless in maps with sniper pickups, with that Railgun doing twice the damage to vehicles for some reason.

Why not an agile and fast mecha? They don't have to be big, heavy chunks of metal.

Some time ago SB recommended vehicle damage be set to .22 for a more realistic approach to that part of combat.

What I meant was that you'd use it more like a turret, like the mounted MCs and stuff. Granted, at the moment they don't seem to terribly useful, as they make you immobile and vulnerable, but they offer a very stable platform thats perfect for mowing down hordes of enemies.

With an open cockpit mech, it'd leave you vulnerable, but you'd have extremely powerful weapons that are very stable, plus, unlike turrets, you are given some mobility. Plus, with it being open, it also make entering and exiting the mech very quick and easy, so if things get hot, you can jump out pretty fast.

But again, I'd like to see more than this style of mech. This one would simply be used as a heavy weapons platform. You might have some designed solely for mobility and scouting purposes, another designed to augment the user's strength and durability but leave them very slow, great for a walking tank or melee specialist.

Actually, on second thought, an open cockpit mech would be quite a bit lighter, considering it has very little armour, which would get very heavy. So perhaps an open cockpit mech could be used as a scouting mech, still offering a stable weapon platform and an open cockpit. Though thinking back on the Matrix mechs, they were loaded down quite a bit with ammo, which could also get heavy.

Customizeable mech loadouts anyone?

Simply start with a simple frame (determines max load, basic integrity, weight, etc), throw in the power source (i.e. electric or gas), the drives (i.e. electric servos, pnuematics, hydrolics, cables, etc.), armour (i.e. type and amount), armaments, and finally ammo. I guess extra packages like radar and stuff could be available too, but I think that'd be better as something you choose for your character, not your mech.

Actually, this could be pretty cool, pretty much drag and drop, and the various aspects could just attach to the various bones on the frame, creating a completely custom looking mech that you could call your own. The armour could simply be plates you drag in place. There should be a grade that offers no protection, just some panels used to flesh out the final mech.

My only question would how could you implement custom mechs to the game? You couldn't really set them up so that you start with them, as that'd really change the game too much. Maybe they could simply be vehicles and you just make custom ones for each team and they spawn in place of default vehicles.

Also, this could be pretty cool if it was done to a vehicle system too, simply have a vehicle as the frame instead of a mech's frame.

Eh. All vehicles are deathtraps in the presence of a Railgun. With an open cockpit, you wouldn't even need that much. Just a guy with an M353 and half a brain. If a vehicle is going to be slow, it's going to have to provide decent protection against your basic small arms fire, or else it's a deathtrap. Scorpions and Mantas are open, but you don't see people getting headshotted out of them very often, since they're so fast.

And you can't really use easy entering or exiting as an advantage for open cockpits, as entering and exiting vehicles is done pretty much instantaneously in UT. And if things get hot, you're no safer outside your vehicle than in it.

Give the slow mech a closed cockpit, but still make it penetrable by larger-caliber weapons, like the M925 (And what is the deal with that thing? It fires .50 BMG rounds which are HUGE, but only do about 37 damage to torsos, while the much smaller AM67 rounds do 60?! This game needs a comprehensive balance overhaul)

Yeah, I see what you mean. Completely forgot about the instant exit and entry of vehicles.

Open cockpit like I mentioned last post should be faster, and taking an approach towards some of Mechwarrior's lighter mechs, it should have a weird running gait, with the person moving quite a bit each stride. Even if the mech itself isn't much faster than walking, if you have a weird stride, it makes things much more difficult.

As for a custom mech loadout, I think it could fit in BW, but more like in games where you choose all your equipment before the round. If I'm not mistaken, this is sort of planned for the future of Archon

Marwars (Red Faction TC for UT2k4) contains the drone, a hovering exosuit. The link goes to a pic of its back. I think it is possible to access it in WORM motorpool if you dump the MarsWars directory into your root UT directory.

May be dont remember very well those mechs, but only place you could shot there the pilot easily was from front, on which you're facil two huge machineguns with little deviation from recoil and dangerous even for vehicles caliber ammo. On sides you have too many obstacles, on back not even possible at all.

On advantages for open cockpit, make vehicle when killed not explode, just crumble and get down to floor unmoveable, player can still leave by foot out of there, vehicle would explode at -2*maxhealth which makes it useful as a cover. Broken vehicle would still pitifully disappear like the broken tank after a while, althoug a bit longer than broken tank which disappears way too fast.
Edit: Entering on "dead" vehicle wouldnt be allowed, only you can stay there if you where already when vehicle reached 0 hp
