perhaps you could only buy weapons in stores that look like computers in your base(s).

That's what I was going for. Do like Far Cry 2 did with weapons. A few things though: You buy from the computer and will be instantly given those guns. When you die, you don't respawn with them, you gotta buy the guns again. Considering that getting money shouldn't be too big a deal, that's a bit of a balancing factor I think. You also could potentially use the credits to also buy vehicles and base additions, so you'll rather save money for those things (and hence why the guns cost not all that much). Selling guns would be silly, you can just salvage them on the battlefield if you don't like the gun. That way you got more use for a salvaging device.

I've had an idea for the buildings, what if you bought vehicles that would sort of "transform" into the base you wanted for example:
-A really bulky, slow behemoth of a vehicle with massive tank treads that unfolds into a sort of outpost where you could buy additional things
-ATV that can turn into a few different items such as tents, sandbag walls, small turrets, etc. just the light temporary stuff... and maybe in the case of the ATV, it can be reused, but only as a transport for yourself

And, maybe where you buy the vehicles there is a computer, like mentioned before, where you buy the vehicle and it appears in a large hanger type thing that emerges from beneath the ground... or just a garage which opens with your vehicle...

Also, I think the computer would look better like the menus from Soldier Of Fortune 2

And one last thing, it should be that you can either share acumulated resources that you gather from kills and such, or if you keep your own resources and can choose whether or not to share... to share you probably go to a base and "dump your resources for others to use

I like my MSDOS type... But really I think FC2 did the buying menu very well. You could buy vehicles from that some computer, but that's what the misc category was for. You select that and it'd show stuff like vehicles and maybe even character upgrades, like Evo Loadout did.

Well some interesting ideas.. But i think the best kind of gameplay will come from simple methods.. That means no complex ways of getting money or doing anything, because if you go that route, most of your time spent will be on doing unneccesery tasks..

The money will just restrict you to certain weapons for your vehicles.. And i dont plan on changing anything to do with BW.. I will make it use default BW loadout systems..

Also i think players will be allowed to walk and shoot, but will always have the choice of piloting some sort of craft..

And the ATV might not go so well.. Basiccally my whole idea revolves around being simple to play..

You think your ideas will work well.. But if all thrown together they wont.. They would be fun on their own, but not alltogether.. BW for example, was kept as simple as possible(That is why it is fun..), any complicated part of it was a gameplay killer(Don't you agree)...

So i'm thinking we need ideas that have to do with the way one achieves victory.. See how my first idea is to destroy things to earn points.. Well any ideas like that would be good, Example: King of the Hill, Assault, Outlast, Ambush, The possibillites are limitless.. Just keep it simple..

Now for some bad news.. I havn't actually done any work on bombardment since my last post.. Main reason being that i can't get UDE working... And i don't know how much work i could squeze in everyday.. Good thing is that most of the bad stuff is out of the way...

At this point you can impact directly on it's gameplay and progress.. So do what you can.. Cause i don't know what i can(Having only me working on it's most important stuff is what is bad, BW had 2 people working on it, and both were more skilled than me..)..

I'm guessing that's why the gun jamming code bits in BW were incomplete and never actually implemented. Overly complex for something like UT (even if UT was then changed a bit to suit BW somewhat more than it was before).

It might not help that I like complexity though... >_>

Just to give an example: In Forza Motorsport 2, you can tune almost anything on your car once you got the upgrades that allow you to do so (or you just have a race car, which automatically has all those tuning options open to you). Just yesterday I was tuning my Peugeot 908 so it could race very well on Sebring International Raceway. I got a good tune from an online calculator thingy, and then went to try tuning the most out of the car for the track. I was COMPLAINING when I found my front tires to be running about 10 degrees colder than my back tires, but the left front was running sometimes as much as 15 degrees colder, and they also ran 0.5 to 0.7 PSI lower than the backs (left front was running 0.6 to 0.8), and I was really getting mad I couldn't tune the individual tires' PSIs.

To me, there is not much in simplicity, I like the details when it comes to these things. Working for the best things in a game shouldn't be as easy as 1-2-3, but a little help does go a long way (reason why I use that suspension calculator, it gives a great place to start for the base tuning for the car). I've used the best tune for a track before, but sometimes I didn't like it entirely (namely how a lot of the tunes are 4 or 5 gear setups, and I know the car can possibly go faster with 5 or 6 gears on some straightaways).

While this is getting a bit off-topic, my point kinda is I'm not the guy for super simplicity. Oop, outta time, I need to get to school ASAP!

Simple is the way to go with games that will be remembered long past their release.

Complex games for the casual gamer will often either intrigue them for a little while, scare them off, or frustrate them to the point that they just throw the game in a corner and forget about it. Only a more niche audience will hang on to them and embrace them. You, Adam, would be part of that niche for complex racing games. You love racing, and you want a very realistic simulation of it in a racing game, I would assume.


Anyways, is there anything I could possibly do to help out with coding? I'm not real good, but I can stumble my way through things most of the time.

So give me a to do list if you'd like and I can lend a helping hand.

Any idea whats wrong with UDE, by the way? I've had a few problems with it starting for me before, I might be able to help you get it working again.

A take on that Outlast idea you mentioned: Some sorta siege game play, where one team has a fort and the other team is trying to break through their defenses and either steal some key object, plant a bomb, destroy something, whatever it is, so long as they have some reason to get in the base. The defenders would have a resource/point pool that would be hard to maintain if they simply remain seated in the base, so they could not hold out indefinitely, as they would need to replace destroyed weapons and vehicles. They would have to send runners out to get some sort of money, either by traveling to certain areas or doing simple tasks. Attackers would then try to pick off the runners, while keeping the rest of the defenders pinned down.

Think of something like the Road Warrior's siege that happened early on in the movie.

It would require both sides to split their forces to some degree, and would require a bit of tactics beyond "Hold the base/Infiltrate the Base". Win condition could simply be to remain alive for so long for the defenders and for the attackers to get into the base and do something.

Would be quite fun for some maps, methinks, and would be a pleasant change of pace from all out vehicle warfare.

And I got an idea for a portable vehicle you can have with you at all times! A pocket bike!



Basically, a tiny little motorcycle that you could sling over your shoulder or store in a back pack. Often they use a chainsaw engine to power them. Might be a bit silly, but hey, its something that is quite feasible as a last ditch vehicle you can use to zip around the battle field with, and carry on you when not in use.

They actually can be quite fast, some going up to 50 miles per hour, or maybe faster.

An idea for Ambush that you mentioned, would be to have a convoy of vehicles, and one special vehicle. The point would be to have someone drive the special vehicle from point A to point B, keeping it intact. Other team mates would have to defend it, and if they die, maybe they respawn at checkpoints the convey has crossed? The opposite team must destroy the key vehicle, ambushing them and shelling them to try to acheive this.

The maps for this game type should have several key points to emphasize ambushes, and several spots where the convoy should be relatively safe, like narrow canyons. This will build the tension, and possibly lull the convoy into a false sense of security, while the opposing team has infantry sneaking up, deploying traps and throwing grenades, while bombers are flying overhead, carpet bombing the convoy.

I see about your liking some complex things.. Just we don't like that too much(Frustrating),like xavious said, simple is remebered.. All the games we like and have liked since LOOOONG ago.. we have studied games guite abit, and now know that simple is better, but that certainly doesn't mean it's easy to make.. but it is much easier..

Now the problem with my UDE is not getting it to run, but installing it, My pc won't open .UMOD files.. i can't even install BW(to be honest i havn't actually tried to fix it)..

There is a way to help out, but you will need the new updates, and i can't upload them because of another site problem..

The bike idea sounds good.. but it doesn't even have to be small, but must have disadvantages..

And i think you hit the Ambush idea right on the head..eh of the nail.. anyway

Maybe the bike operates that if you are hit with enough force, you fall off (and have chances of getting run over!). Also, any sort of weapon damage over a certain amount should knock you off too.

In a simpler way.... don't get hit.

Here you should find a UMOD extractor. It was made for UT99, so when you want to extract something for UT2004, you need to change the file type filter to all types, but that's a rather minor setback.

Edit: Played it, i think the apocalypse, or whatever they're called are a bit weird, i'm assuming that they are some sort of practice for a hovercraaft or something, but, they start off really slowly, rotate at incredible speeds, and when i take them into an incline, they get stuck in the ground

The stealth bomber is still weird for me, when flying flips, and the nose sticks straight into the air at 90 degrees, well at least it takes off now...

I like how there are now structures that you can go into, the sniper towers

Was flying my Bomber, it appears that it crashed when it stalled out, I think. It suddenly flipped, stayed pointing upwards, and after a time, when I imagine it would've stalled out, it crashed the game. I was over, I think, the barrels for the red team. I have stalled out several times with my bomber in this version and it didn't crash, so I dunno if it stalling out was any relation to the crash.

As for the Hover Craft, it doesn't feel like a hover craft in any sense, doesn't slide around, doesn't seem to bounce much, etc. Still alpha though, I'm sure.

I can whip up a model for you for a hovercraft though. Just give me some ideas for class and armaments and stuff.

Ok.. well that problem with the stealth bomber is that it's pivots are still weird and i haven't fixed them yet..

And that error report is that emitter problem still.. i think it's got less common though..

And that 'Hover craft' is not a hover craft at ALL!!.. it's supposed to be a ship, it speeds up like one.. But i cant limit it's steering speed when standing still, Because it's based on a tank, it's other problem is that it can go on land.. Don't worry when it comes to hover craft, they will be decent, this was not supposed to a hover craft.

Now for the good news, For the last three days i have been working solidly on the bombardment code.. AND!! i have made some good progress.. The PC speed issue has been solved, so everyone will see the same thing.. Further more, i have constructed an important aspect of the gameplay.. UPGRADES!!

You can configure your keys for bombardment, one of which will open an upgrade menu when you are walking around or in a vehicle(Only works in tank right now), you can choose your upgrade for three categories, 'Chassis Upgrades', 'Weapon Upgrades', 'Player Upgrades', all of which cost money(not yet), and have a max level of 10, each upgrade has it's advantages, and will turn your vehicle or player into a killing machine.. The most common upgrade is 'Repair', which as you can imagine, would be quite useful... The other bombardment key has been around for a long time, and is used by the wasp for it's landing gear..

There are also a host of options under the gametype rules before you start the game.. Be sure to check out all this stuff..

it looks like teh upgrades are working, however .
what upgrades we will have at the "player upgrades" tab?
and you could put the level that the player is on the side of the options. so you know what level you are in speed, for example.

and I suggest to take those trails in the tanks off. it looks cool, but it lags so much in my computer.
maybe you could make a on/off checkbox for this.
about those trails, too, is a problem that any movement spawn that trail, so even if you move 1 cm it spawn a trail. so sometimes I get lots of these in one place.
and why the blue base is so poor btw?
I got a holy shit when I fired a tank shell against the blues. they were all in the same place, because their base is small

-Toxic shells: when it explode, it will release a small cloud of toxic substances. it's like the toxic grenade, but in a shell.
-Fire shells: the smae as above, but it spawns fire.
if you want I can model those shells.
perhaps you can put some fast vehicles there(jeeps, etc).
but now I noticed that it crashes more rarely than before.
maybe we can make a smaller map to it too?

Oops, Sorry about the mistake. But as far as keeping it on water. there was some other group that made boats and stuff, and what they did was make a specialized blocking volume for the boats and just placed them around the shores.

But my offer still stands, if there's any boat you want modeled, I can do it for you some time.

Well the player will be able to buy full armor, health, adrenaline, and speed..

And it will list what level the upgrade is on.. from 0, to 10, In all upgrades..
Further more it lists what effect it has(A value like 0.5), and for speed it has a MPH meter..


This is bizzare.. I for some reason have never seen the dust clouds working on the new leopard.. I will check that out.. And yes it spawns them if you move at all, because the tracks would generate dust in such a manner..



The blue base is poor because i'm biased toward red, i better change that..

The objective is not to just destroy the barrels, but anything you can, like the enemy vehicles.. they give you points too..

As for bot support.. AHHAHAHA, much later, alot of work and we don't have all the basics yet, let alone AI..



The upgrades will work more on a weapon buying system, rather than buying different projectiles, i decided to make it like this instead, because it's simpler and more powerful..

You can model as many shells as you want, they would only take a minute or 2 to make anyway.. But make them simple and cheap on polys.. If you could texture them that would be even better

As for jeeps, those are already planned, but not modeled or anything, so model them if you can.. i'll work on some Bombardment wheledcraft at some point, they shouldn't need too much..

As for the map, you can make it if you want.. it's really not that hard to make a map good for Bombardment..



You can make a dinghy if you want, or a sub or, well anything...

With the idea of Jeeps working for this gametype, I should be able to get something to come along with my Assault Truck model. I just need to get a quick UV map done, along with setting up the bones for anims.

Here in south africa we use the KPH system.. I only made it MPH because it's used in the US, and some other places..

That trail, being the track projector is terrible i know.. Turing off projectors will cure it..
It's because it has to spawn so many at one time, Projectors are slow in the ol' UT..

lately i've been tinkering with blender a bit, made a few simple models... like this one i whipped up in no time. i might fix up the texture a little as it seems a bit plain. if you're interested,i'll put up a link as soon as I can (got no internet atm, have to use others and haven't got all the files with me right now) so you can do whatever with it.

on another note, the hydra guns have a problem, they both seem to point the same direction, so when you want to shoot one of the guns, you can't because it is constantly pointing into the interior of the helicopter. And if it's no problem, could I try texturing them

is there a UV map or something for it? i've tried texturing without a uv map, and it takes aaaaages and still never looks purfect

I'm sad to say the enivitable has oocurred, Bombardment is no more!!, I have stopped working on it for a while now..

I knew early on that it was a huge project, one that i alone could not lead to the ende soon enough... If i had continued solidly for a year i might be done, but what good would a 2K4 mod be in 1 year..

I just wish i could have put the work that you guys put into Bombardment to better use, and not have it lead to this, but you all have learned something from your own work and mine.. Aim for a goal that you can do in a decent time frame.. Not one that requires too much stuff, and will be out of date when completed, such is a huge problem these days, what with technology advancing so quick, games need to be made faster than ever before..

Good luck with all your own projects, this one is no more..

It is quite a lot to do for a small group of people, perhaps just focusing on one aspect would have been a better start?
